You more that likely will have battle training, just like my friends has done, hes off in 5 weeks. From what I've heard from mates in 3 Para it's not pretty.
All you can do wear your protective clothing at all times, keep your wits about you, keep your head down, sleep and eat when you can. You'll be OK, make sure you have lots of letters and parcels from home, and e blueys specially from your fiancee and mum, you'll get a 20 min phone card a week so use it wisely.
Good luck, Keep safe. We're proud of you and all the lads in the hot sandy places xx

You will now have to bring all your professional skills into play. Taliban are fighters from the Pashtun tribes - the most warrior race of people on earth. Know your enemy. Be a man every second of the time you are there. Believe in your own strength and power. Be just.
May your god bless you and keep you safe, inshallah.

Don't try and be a hero your first day, week or month, listen to what others say that have been there for some time. Watch your buddies back and he will watch yours.

Learn as much about the culture and language as possible. Keep your eyes and ears open. Watch out for your buddies and let them know that you are doing that so that they will be more inclined to watch out for you too. If you do see combat (hope not!) remember your training - you can "freak out" afterwards but you won't have time for it in that situation. Above all else, learn the local customs and as much of the language as possible. The Afghan people can be the best friends you ever had so be nice to them and try to make as many friends as you can. If you have "sixth sense" turn it on and LEAVE it on. NEVER get complacent until you are safely back home. Practice with your weapon until you are very, very good with it - then pray that you never need it - but if you do then you will be prepared. Come home safe buddy - see you when you get back home.
