My husband (in BCT now) was assigned Korean at DLI but knows some Arabic. Can he change it? How?
His assignment of a language at DLI is based on his test scores and the needs of the Army. It's not about him, what he knows or what he'd like to do. If they assigned him Korean it's because that's what they need him for.
I was in the same boat when I got to DLI. I already knew a lot of Arabic, but because of what I scored on the DLAB they put me in Korean. There is absolutely no way that he can change that because it's based on what the military needs. I, luckily, after graduating had the option of remaining a Korean linguist or becoming an Analyst, and I chose to be an analyst. After working with A LOT of linguist, I feel it was a good choice.
Another thing I will say is that he is going to need your support during the course. Korean is one of the hardest languages in the world to learn, and especially hard for English speakers. It has a very high failure rate. My class started with 30 individuals and only 10 made it to the end. If you have any more questions about DLI or the Korean course, feel free to ask. I just left there in 2005.
