People may do well to keep in mind that "pounds" and height can NOT tell you if a person is fat or not. Muscle weighs more than fat. You can be 5'4 and weigh 200 pounds and not have an ounce of fat on your body. At the same time, it can be all fat. Numbers mean nothing, use your brains people!

That's BS, seriously that's wrong. I mean you're obviously a physical person and you work out, and yet they deny you and allow obese people with actual health problems join. You can't help your bone structure. They probably wouldnt let me join because my hips were too tiny lol.
They wanted to recruit my brother in the Navy, Army, and the Marines and they knew he had ADHD, and sports induced asthma and they said they werent going to tell anyone and just let him join, plus he fractured his back 2 years ago and they still were willing to let all that crap slide.
Tex, obviously doesnt know muscle weighs more than fat.

It sounds as if the test was done incorrectly, try a different recruiting office and press the issue.

Yeah, that doesn't make any sense. The army uses some weird body fat percentage thing where as the air force, from what i've been told, goes strictly by a height/weight chart. If you really want to go into the military, the air force could be the path you must take. You can't change your hips

Well, if you were telling the truth, you would be right. You wouldn't be fat by Army standards. 145 lbs meets the screening criteria for 5 feet 4 inches (in accordance with AR 600-9 Table 3-1), and you wouldn't need to even get taped. That means your hips wouldn't matter.
However, I don't believe that one of the professionals at the recruiting station made an oversight when checking the table. Don't understand what incentive you have to lie to us in your question, but it is obvious that you are.
Also, if there was a medical way to show you were within body fat standards (like the caliper method), they would take if you failed the screening criteria.

You sound good to me and I was a 1rst Sgt in the Army. I once had to put people out because they had no neck and looked ridiculous in uniform, but they were phisically fit, full of muscles. The Army had an enormous amount of regulations that control even how you cut your mustache, and they are there for a reason. To look good, although that's irrelevant in war. My advice, don't give up go and try the other branches, I'm pretty sure the Air force will be happy to have you or the Navy, remember is not a job it's an adventure.

I'm no Einstein but if your hips are 42", there is no way that you can wear a Size 6.
Something just doesn't add up !?
For the record....5'4"" and 145 lbs is a bit overweight.

Air Force is the way to go, if you want action go into airborne and parachuting. Air Force also offers more college opportunities than the Army. Talk to a recruiter first.

Wow, they'll let former criminals and drug addicts in and they deny you because you have hips? That's ridiculous. You sound like you're in GREAT shape, I wish I had a 19% body fat percentage.

I am in the AF, been there for 18 years. I encourage you to come into the AF. We need people with your skills. Regardless of the branch of service, your skills will be put to use for the nation.
We have weigh and height standards, but they are not as tight. If you can pass the fitness test (1.5 mile run, sit-ups, push-ups, and waist measurement) then you are good.
Call your nearest AF recruiter. Good Luck.

MEPS conducts physicals for all branches. If you do not qualify for the Army, you also do not qualify for the navy, Corps, or Air Force. All you can do is wait until your RBJ date, that's the date you can go back, and get re-measured. There are no waivers authorized for this unless you are already on active duty, which you are not. I know the pain you feel about this but these are the standards. Also, even if you meet the stardards at MEPS, understand that you will have to meet the same standards every 6 months. Failing to meet the standard 3 times can and lately will result in you being discharged. Good Luck.

It has nothing to do with your hips solely and the air force won't accept you either, it is a service wide standard. It is a proportion test designed to obtain you body fat percentage. You obviously failed the weight test so the taped you, you failed that as well. If you really want to join any branch of the military you will need to lose some inches.
Even though someone may be "clearly" overweight in your eyes, the tape test will be the final decider on acceptable weight.

i feel your pain. i was in the army as a 42-32-42 and was very close to popping tape everytime. the only rhyme or reason to it other than the Army standards are strict and wierd.

Tell you the truth, that makes absolutely no sense. If i was the Air Force i would definitely let you join. Especially with how "desperate" we are for people. Kind of stupid if you ask me, bullshit really.. I'd maybe go talk to another branch of the military and see what they have to say about it.. your ASVAB was obviously good enough to get into the USAF and on top of that you have a college degree! You should of had no problem. I would try contacting the USAF again or another branch of the military to adress the problem.
Best of luck!

A rule is a rule .? Might have something to do with a prediliction for injury ( on average - not you specifically ) .Female basketball players have 13 times the knee injuries as males . It's because wider hips = different angles = more stress on parts of the knee . You have wider hips , so........... Might be that .

I would try out for the Air Force. They have a higher retention rate and shorter deployments. I was in the Army Reserves for 8 years and am a bigger guy. Similar situation with having other people being heavier than I get promoted over me. I think the height and weight standards are a little silly at times. Being 6'1" tall says that I should weigh no more than 205 pounds! I didn't weigh 205 pounds as a freshman in high school! Muscle weighs more than fat as I'm sure you know, but the military doesn't always account for that. At least the Army.
Hope that helps. You are not alone!

Try the Air Force, especially if you have a 92 on the ASVAB. Since you are finishing college, you will want to go to OCS (Officer's Candidate School), because being an officer gives you lots more pay and a better life. You don't need to be a pilot or mechanic to be in the Air Force. They have all kinds of jobs.

The air force is better for the type of mos you want anyway, plus the life style is alot better, and they have shorter deployments. Try going with them.

Try another Army recruiting station.
I hear they are even taking high school drop outs
and ex drug addicts...after all...your just going to be
shipped to Iraq to be killed...whats a little weight to them?
The Army does need warm-alive bodies...
I can't see how they would possibly turn
down yours!

they denied me for dry skin in 2004
i told them to shove it because in about 1 year they are gonna be hurting for enlistees and they are denying me for dry skin
haha i was right. they tried to call me back to enlist again. i todl them they had their chance. i started my life already and it would be a step backward in my life.
its cool though, im sure if i had gone in the army, i would not have gotten engaged.
now im a police officer. seems that the dry skin does not hinder my duties as an officer.

Im sorry but if you have 42 inch hip there is no way you could fit in a size 6... the average waist size for a size 6 is 23 inches with a 32 hip... a size 18 has a hip average of 42 inches...so you have to be bigger then what you think...its impossible for you to be a size 6 with your stats that you gave. Unless you are a size 6 ontop and an 18 on the bottom.
