well some fights do have to be fought, but there are some that you can back away from sure you won't like earn the same respect from people, but at least you'll be sure you can live another day, it shouldn't be like that, that you have to put your life on the line to be respected by your country but i for sure respect have all the respect in the world for soldiers, i guess putting your life in risk everyday does kind of make you like a hero.........

If your govn't had declared war like the constitutional says then i would say yes! But since this govn't has not followed the constitution by injecting it self in over 137 different countries since ww11. I will say NO!
You would be just a mercenary for the elite trying to put this one world ordered down our throats.

No but if no body stepped up to fight, would we have a country?
Think about it, war gave us a country and fighting has protected it for a few hundred years. My families freedoms and safety is worth my life and every good man would risk nothing less.

Yes. If you're not willing to die to defend your country how can you say you support it? Superficial support is not support. I started OCS because I love my country not to earn anyone's respect, I respect myself and don't particularly care what most anyone else thinks.

I am seriously considering joining the Army and going to Iraq.
I am going to do it to better my future and to help people in Iraq and other Soldiers.
I dont even really think of it fighting for freedom because there is no real threat other than Iran.
I guess the label of fighting for your country is just icing on the cake for me.

Ricky Coolwhip got it right.
There's only one Democratic candidate who didn't vote for the war and doesn't vote OVER and OVER again to keep funding it (i.e. re-authorize it all over again). It's not Clinton, Obama, or Edwards. It's Kucinich and I'm voting for him.

This question is a broad one that transcends any particular war. Indeed, I could reference the Spartans at Thermopylae as an example, given that they fought to the death in defence of their city-state and all of Greece. (I watched the movie 300 last night.)
I suppose that the equivalent question would be does one wish to live with the consequence of not fighting for one's country? There have been a number of invasions in history that were successful simply because the invaded did not wish to oppose the invaders. (Sometimes, they were even welcomed.) This would explain a great many citizens that do not enlist to fight in a war, mainly because they have no stake in the outcome.
Looking at it on a social dynamic point-of-view, we are generally willing to risk our lives in defence of our families. This is a basic instinct seen in many species, such as a lioness protecting her cubs. When we extend that idea to a community, it is generally easy to see that a common defence is vital, much like a pride of lions fighting together for all members of their community.
With a nation, it begins to stretch this community idea somewhat. While we might know and fight for our neighbours, it becomes a question of whether we extend that notion to other in cities farther away. From a pure instinctial aspect, I would say that it isn't worth it.
Yet human societies are more complex than that. Within a nation, there is often a common philosophy, whether it be economic, political, religious, or otherwise. Many people do go beyond the basic idea of community preservation and aspire to these loftier ideals. In that context, then risking one's life in defence of these ideals makes sense.
Whether or not it should generate respect from one's countrymen, I doubt that is a sufficient motivation as there are far less risky avenues for that. Instead, I suspect that most who volunteer for this kind of duty are doing so with their own self-respect in mind. That is something that I can respect.

There are many ways to fight for your country and does not necesarily have to be with weapons. Gandhi fought for what he believe in a peaceful way and was assasinated. But I would take his approach first.

If you are not willing to fight for your country ... you have no right to live in your country.
Respect comes from what you do not where you are.
And alot of people earn respect without fighting a war for their country.
But I will and do respect those that do fight for their country.

I'm in the military and I dont know anybody that would risk their life just for respect from their country(except for maybe samurai's in the feudal japan era). You risk your life fighting for your country because ITS THE RIGHT THING TO DO. What kind of country do you think we would have if nobody wanted to fight to protect their freedom?

Where did you ever get the notion that it was all about respect??
I'm not sure where you're at ... but if it weren't for those willing to die and risk their lives for this country ... America would most likely not exist. In fact the entire world would probably still be saying "Heil Hitler!"
Military men and women don't join knowing they are putting their lives at risk just because they want to earn "respect". It is MUCH deeper and more important than that. The point of ANY military is to protect their country. To be willing to die unselfishly so that others have a chance at survival.
If you happen to be referring to Iraq. Our soldiers do what their told to do regardless of yours or anyone else's opinion. That's their job. And I thank God everyday that we have enough young men and women willing to risk their very lives to ensure the safety of all of ours.
As it stands now a country couldn't survive without a military. I am 100% for peace, but in this crazy mixed up world it just doesn't seem possible. You can't be sitting ducks ... you need to have protection from those who seek to harm you. I am glad we have enough heroes within who are less about respect ... and much more about being unselfish protectors.

When one is willing to risk there own life for something, they are either very aware of the possible consequences, or they have no idea as to what they are getting themselves into. I think most soldiers risk there lives for there country, because it shows complete and total respect to their family's name and their Country's Honor.

Yes it is worth it. I think its a great idea to have every able man serve 2 years in the military. Thats it, just to kind of pay their "debt", and make everyone appreciate all that they have. I know that such a thing will never happen, but to me it sounds good. I guess I have been in for too long and don't remember what it is like to give up normal life.
Fighting for your country should not be a punishment, it should be an honor.

It's not your country's respect you are looking for. Sure when you get back you get the respect of people. The reason is you are fighting for freedom and justice for everyone. Those things matter and are the cornerstone of democracy. Stop fighting wars and we'll lose the rights we have.
People died fighting wars just to give us the right of free speech. Otherwise opinions like these would be banned, prohibited. There would be no Yahoo Answers without people fighting wars.
Go visit a country where there are no rights. Then make up your mind.

People should not have to go through fighting in a war to earn respect from their country. There are other ways to earn respect so that's kind of sad. However, if one had to have a reason to show respect to someone they don't know, that would be a good one. Personally, I find it unfortunate that there are so many people in this country so highly respected having done nothing respectable to earn it but be born with money or behave like animals or some such nonsense, but maybe that's just me.
I suppose it really depends on what a person feels is worth dying for. I fight in my own way for this country every day. Would I take up arms and defend the republic against invaders? Absolutely. To the death, I would defend the people of this republic and the DOI and Constitution from such. Yet, having said that, I hardly think that someone hurling a pumpkin into my front door is good cause for a literal shootout and I believe in patriotism, not nationalism.
I think it's important to remember that war is not what it once was... the world has changed tremendously. Some wage too easily and with less good cause because they are so far removed from it and we have all that cool technology. Perhaps they need something better to do.
