In our current state, probably China unfortunately, unless we hit the Nuclear button first. Our military is stretched thin and theirs is fresh and 5 times the size of ours. their ICBMs can hit the mainland US and they have subs as well. so it would be tough. I think if we went all out, tactically we could take them. But any way you cut it we would both loose. Also, because of our NAtional debt China owns about $1 trillion in US bonds. Our payment to them on those is about $75 billion per year. their annual military budget is $150 billion so we pay for half of their military every year.

hmm... this depends on what you mean by win? lol! china does indeed have more men, equip., etc. the problem here is logistics. the US would most likely never invade China on the ground. Chinas infantry strength would be overwhelming although her loses would be incredibly high. China would most likely pour man after man into the fray hoping for a win by overwhelming strength. However, China does not have the ability at this time to wage an assault against the US simply because she would not be able to transport her armies over seas without being detected. could you imagine someone in Beijing airport watching thousands of soldiers board commercial jets bound for the other side of the globe? the accepted course of action by scholars and planners is that both countries would begin by defying each others interests in other places on earth. this would result in saber rattling and possibly UN sanctions. beyond this, there would be little point to an actual armed conflict. the most likely scenario in my opinion is that we would not enter into a conflict with China unless she were to attack someone with nukes. Taiwan, even though an ally to the US would probably not be considered worth the money and manpower to save from a Chinese aggression. as for technological acheivements by China all you have to do is look at their success rate of said advancements. she has a very poor record for successful missle launchs and the US arsenal is still accepted to be the most advanced worldwide. looks like another cold war on this one my friend.

Assuming the US abandons all efforts in the middle east and focuses entirely on China, US wins w/o a doubt. It would be one of the harder wars we've ever fought, but here's a couple things to consider.
1. The US is tried and tested. This is a huge factor, exercises and training cannot take the place of the real thing.
2. The US military has never been better. We have lost 3,500 brave soldiers, it is sad but true. We are facing a lethal and committed guerrilla force/insurgency. Consider that we faced the same type of enemy in Vietnam, and lost 70,000 plus soldiers.
3. Consider the general support in the American public when faced with such a threat. It would be like WWII again.

America has the worlds premier military. Our Air Force is unquestionably the best and largest in the world. Our Navy is bigger than the combined navies of the rest of the world. And it isn't just quantity, its quality. Our soldiers are the best trained and equipped fighters the world has ever seen.
America maintains dominance of outer space ( NASA, Space Command ) as well. Very important for a major war with China.
Keep in mind, China cannot invade America. It is impossible! But America can very very easily invade China. We could sit of their coast and launch Tomahawk missiles day and night year after year after year if we feel like it. We would never be so inhumane but...if China starts a fight. Then its a fight they shall get.
-and a war between America and China will be an "Open War", not a reconstruction effort like in Iraq. An Open WAR!!!

Well in Texan mode the US of course, in China mode, China.
Watch the economics, if China beats the US on national output they can win any battle. Worse still is the infiltration over 50 years of Chinese takeaways and restaurants. Whose side are they goning to support

Depends on what sort of war. If a war like the old "World wars", with just two combatants, China have far more men to use as well as more money to spend on advanced warfare. However, America could easily outlast them in a "Cold War" situation, having more power in the UN means that America could quickly halt trade with them, ensuring they would collapse quickly and have to surrender...I would hope America, as they are our greatest friend atm. However, China would put up a huge fight!

This is rather implausible both countries have too much to lose by open conflict. Besides China will bury us economically eventually.
In open conflict I would say this.
Both sides would table the Nuclear arsenal. Again, too much to lose in world opinion if we start popping the big mushrooms.
China currently does not have a navy capable of extending power abroad. Their Navy consists of Gun boats, missile boats, frigates, and some diesel subs. This is a coastal defense force.
The US could not land troops on Chinese soil and hope to support them and win in a land war against the Chinese military. On the other hand, the Chinese military lacks the ability to land and support troops on US soil either. Their Navy lacks the capacity to carry out this type of attack and support troops.
In order to attack China the U.S. Air Force would need to get permission to fly combat missions from bases in allied territory. Namely Japan. I do not think Japan would allow this because they would not want to get embroiled in this conflict, and would not want North Korea to attack either. This puts most of the burden squarley on the shoulders of our Navy. Luckily we have the most powerful Navy in the world.
To limit the scope of this conflict it would be an engagement between naval forces, air power, special forces units, and cruise missiles from both sides.
The U.S. does not have the distinct technological edge over the Chinese it enjoys over other airforces. The Chinese air force has a large amount of older equipment, but it also has respectable numbers of very modern aircraft as well. The Chinese Air Defense systems are also very modern mixed with older equipment as well and should be considered very potent.
Stealth Technology and precision munitions would assist us in striking their coastal military targets, but I am not sure how successful a deep strike would be at penetrating their air space.
China also has precision munitions and since this battle would be fought mainly by our Navy's carrier task forces it would be a true test of the Aegis system. China does have the ability to launch a big enough strike force that stopping each and every missile or aircraft might be impossible. We could lose a lot of ships.
In the end a lot of people would die on both sides. Both navies would take losses. The Chinese navy would be fairly decimated. A lot of aircraft would be lost on both sides. Chinese coastal military targets would be hit. No clear winner would emerge.
Little more than a stalemate would be achieved. We do not have the power to wipe their air force out of the air completly, and they lack the ability to wipe our Navy from the seas or skies either. It would be interesting, but ultimately it would destabilize the eintire region and both economies, and set back progress for decades. Like I said too much to lose for both sides.
I doubt the US would initiate open conflict even if China decides to retake Taiwan.

Uh, neither would "win". In an era of intercontinental ballistic nuclear missiles, there exists a concept called "mutually assured destruction". Look it up some time, it is basically the only reason the US and the USSR didn't actually go to war in the 40 years following the destruction of Hiroshima...
All these people saying China are a bunch of idiots. Just because China has more people does not mean a damn thing. Does China have Trident nuclear submarines? Don't think so. The US would be quite capable of wiping China out, just as they would be capable of launching nukes at us. The difference is that a first strike by China, even if they destroyed the US mainland, would still be destroyed themselves as the US has the capability to launch missiles from anywhere a Trident sub is located in the world's oceans.
It's hilarious how people assume a country with more people would win a war. It's more about who has the best technology.

Mute point. China won't attack the same people they are lending billions of dollars and earning huge interest off of. Nor would they attack their biggest market for their products. Economic ties are too important.

It's debatable because we have more advanced technology that they do, but theyt have sheer manpower. They could send thousands of troops into a battle in waves just like the Soviets did against the Germans in WW2.

And you don't think we haven't developed sophisticated technological weaponry ourselves? It would be a toss up. We do have 300 million potentially armed people in this country and very advance weaponry. If we quit buying their products we would cripple their economy is real short order.
