Yes they can. They can't be infantry though. But if they choose the right MOS like Military Police, then they can.

Women have been fighting since the World Wars especially in world war II. you can fight both ways; supporting the US policies overseas at home is one, and you can join up in the army.

Absolutely. I think it's been something like 20-30 years. Formerly, women were usually given positions away from the front lines, but this has changed, and continues to change just as society itself does regarding issues like this. One thing worth mentioning; Men between 18 and 25 are required to register for the draft, which, if activated, could mean they'd be required to serve. Women are not required to do this, and a 1980 court ruling promoted by the National Organization for Women and the ACLU was unsuccessful in abetting this discrimination, if you will.

They legally are not supposed to be in combat situations. Women attached to combat battallions are called Lionesses. They end up fighting anyway but they are not given the extended training for fighting because they are not supposed to be in direct combat or firefight situations. There is a film called Lionesses which is on dvd, created by PBS.

Women are not allowed in jobs which have a high likelyhood of direct combats such as Infantry, Armor, Artillery or Special Operations.
On the other hand, all other jobs are open to women and the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan are asymetrical meaning there is no front line and attacks can some at anytime from any direction.
Women who find themselves in a combat situation are expected to fight alongside their male counterparts.

Women can serve in the military, and hold any post a man can except front line infantry positions. Women can also hold any rank a man can, and make as much money as men do in the military.
Good luck.
