Years ago the left hand was considered to be less dominate because the majority of people where right handed people. So it made more sense to wear your precious jewls on your less dominate hand so that your jewls wouldnt be tarnished so easy. (because obviously if you wear it on your dominate hand it will get beat up) That belief kinda turned into tradition.

bscause most people shake hands right-handed and back in the day thieves would steal your rings if you wore them on your right hand.

I believe it is because the left hand is considered the heart hand which comes from the early belief that the heart is located on the left side of the chest. Actually it is in the center but the left side of the heart has a louder beat. But anyway since the heart is associated with love the custom became so that the wedding ring, a symbol of love, would be work on the heart hand... the left hand.
Old habits die hard!

Why is the wedding band worn on the left hand?
à Again, this custom started with the Egyptians. They believed that the vein located on the fourth finger of the left hand was connected directly to the heart.

Before medical science discovered how the circulatory system functioned, people believed that a vein of blood ran directly from the fourth finger on the left hand to the heart. (This belief allegedly dates to the 3rd century BC in Greece.) Because of the hand-heart connection, people named the putative vein descriptively vena amori, Latin for 'the vein of love'. Due to this tradition, it became accepted to wear the wedding ring on this finger. By wearing rings on the fourth finger of their left hands, a married couple symbolically declares their eternal love for each other. This has now become a matter of tradition and etiquette.
In most Western cultures, the wedding ring is worn on the left hand. In some countries, however, such as Germany, Norway, and Chile, it is worn on the right hand. Orthodox Christians, Eastern Europeans and Jews also traditionally wear the wedding band on the right hand.
Etiquette frowns severely on the making of sexual overtures to a man or woman wearing a wedding ring

Because most people are right-handed and they do more stuff with their right hands. And, that means they do more strength-requiring tasks with it. So they would be losing it a lot on that hand, or it would hear their finger as they worked with some kinds of tools.
I am just guessing, but that seems reasonable.

In medieval England, a bridegroom would slide the ring part way up his bride's thumb, index and middle finger, saying "In the name of the father, the son, and the holy ghost" as he passed each one. He then put the ring on the next available finger - the third finger of the left hand. This practice was finally formalized in the 1500's when Henry VIII's son authored The Book of Common Prayer, which gives English modern Protestant wedding vows and decrees on which finger our wedding rings should go.

That is one of the social dictates. Society dictated it because one man started and everyone joined. They claim there is a vein to the heart, but I think that is a vibe. Toomany medical stuff out there that are nothing but crazy conclusion from crazy researches.

It is not a universal custom. In Germany for instance the left hand is for engagement rings, wedding rings (usually the same object) are worn on the right hand ring finger.

In ancient times, it was believed there was a vein in the third finger of the left hand that ran directly to the heart. Thus, the ring being placed on that finger, denoted the strong connection of a heartfelt love and commitment to one another. Although during times of modern autopsy, this long held belief was found not to be so, the tradition continued to this day.
Also remember that the heart is on the left hand side of the body ;)

I somehow agree with the answer about England's tradition... although I heard that they put it on the left hand because they hold swords on the right hand, and wearing a ring on that finger would conflict with the sword fights. Well, so I heard... :P
