I'm pretty sure it is 16 and what that guy above me said is true for NJ too. And with those big chain stores my guess is they are all 16+ and won't bend the rules like some places might, because of policy.
It usually depends on the employer as to what their minimum hiring age is. In most states it is 16 years old. Although, I have seen cases where 15 year olds are allowed to work, but with very strict break requirements and limits on how late they are allowed to work. There are also limits for 16 years old, but they are not as strict. Once you hit 18, you are free to work pretty much anywhere. Keep in mind that this varies from state to state. My experience is in Florida. But I assume that different state have similar practices.
