Should I fire this guy ?
|
I caught my employee sleeping on the job. Probably he slept from 2:00 -2:30 PM when I caught him. Should I fire this guy for sleeping on the job ?
He is just an average employee. Not good and not bad either. I am not the owner. I am just the boss.
If it was about 10 years ago, I would have fired him right on the spot. But these days I hear that, in IT companies, etc., the employee, play eat and sleep at work and they work and solve the major problems at home.
What is your opinion ?

I'd give him a written warning and a stern talking to. Let him know that it is completely unacceptable and that if it happens again, his employment will be terminated.

Naturally it is wrong to sleep on the job..but it might be nice to question him he may be having some kind of problem or hardship which is causing the drowsiness.

You need to give him a warning first, and have him sign it. It's called a write-up. Then if he gets 3 warnings, you'll have cause to fire him, and you'll have written documentation. Check with your owner, do they have a policy for this?

I don't know where you work. If he meets his deadlines (if you have those..?) then don't fire him. If he doesn't, fire him.
Try talking to him about it, see what he has to say.

I'd fire him, or at least give him a stern, written warning that if it happens again, even if he just dozes off for a short time, he's gone.

Is he an hourly employee? Then dock him the time he was sleeping, or can his butt. Be sure to write him up properly.
If he's on salary, I'd have a stern conversation with him, including the fact that he's no superstar, but just one of the average guys.

It depends on what is in the company's policy if employees are allowed to eat and nap on the job. Discuss this with human resource. If sleeping on the job is automatic termination, then you should take it to the attention of the HR or whom ever is over your head.
If this was the first time you caught him and you said something to him make it known that you've given him a verbal warning. The next time you catch him it would be a written warning and the third incident would be immediate termination.
You could talk to him to determine why he's sleeping on the job. He has probably done it before and he has never been caught. If there is something you can do such as change his hours or change his lunch time, or allow a day off then allow it. It's best to let him ask for it rather you offering these options. If he chooses none make it known that you've given a verbal warning that next time it will be a written or immediate termination.

I would pull him aside and ask him what is going on in his life that is making you sleep at work. You don't know what is on his plate and sometimes compassion goes a long way. When you talk to him I would be honest and say that this was a tough decision for you to make to give him one more chance as he is normally an average worker. Listen to his reason why first then tell him this is the last time this will happen and that you want your employees to go the extra mile and there are a lot of people who are out of a job who would love his position. You can be kind but direct. But stick to what you say if he does it again.

Warn him, make him think you are gonna fire him, make him think he should be fired, and then let him off the hook. It will keep you from having to go through the mess of firing someone, it will hopefully get it to stop, and it will earn you some respect.

Usually, I would recommend you fire the guy.
However, given the current state of the economy, I'd urge you to think twice. It's probably very difficult to find a job in the current market. Perhaps he had a bad day? If you speak only of a single incident, and not a recurring problem, I think you should give this guy one more chance. I'm sure that's what you'd want if you were in his position.

No do not fire him, there are allot of people who agree that a little nap makes employee's more productive. As long as he did not put the company at risk I would just let it go.
I have been a supervisor for 5 yrs and I allow my employee's to nap as long as it does not interfere with their workload. One of my co-workers in a previous job was allowed to turn off her light and lock her office door to nap. If we saw the lights off we did not disturb her for at least a half hour.
Some jobs are such that you can not nap at work because it puts the company at risk in those cases it is clearly spelled out to employees. Follow your companies policy and procedure manual.

Was he on a break or lunch break? Why was he sleeping? Talk to him about this and the consequences of sleeping on the job. Firing someone at work may not solve a problem and may even create more problems when the other employees find out about it, which they probably will.
If you carry out this deed you will have to replace him and train a new worker which will cost the owner time and money. Working with people and demonstrating your managerial skills is often the more productive way to go about these situations. People often have long memories when it comes to work situations and you may even cross paths with this worker again. What if you end up working under him in the future?
I owned and ran a business with about half a dozen employees. Releasing a worker on a positive or negative note brought about consequences relating to office structure, job duties, friendships and alerting competition to the situation.
Think again about the consequences of your actions. Wielding firing power could be akin to firing a gun, once you pull the trigger the damage is done. Good luck.
