Depends on the case. As some of the posters have listed personal injury cases and workers comp cases are usually handled by the lawyer getting a strong percentage of the winnings. In a criminal law case the state must provide a legally indigent person with an attorney. In most divorce cases a non-working spouse can get the other spouse to be ordered by the court to pay all legal fees. In cases involving employment law, or a civil suit the client must pay for service -- just like a food store, gas in your car, or a restaurant.
As for legal aid services, your friend will need to prove that she legally does not have an income to qualify. That usually requires a copy of the last IRS filing. Our current government has cut money to this type of service down to a point where these type of FREE services are rare. Yes, some law firms do pro bono FREE work. That work is usually assigned by a local bar association. In order to qualify the client would need to show a true financial need and her case needs to be legitimate. She may want to contact the bar associations in her city-county-state to see if her case qualifies.
Hey, can someone tell me where a poor lawyer can get pro bono utilities???

you need to hire a lawyer that has a no-win-no-fee charging policy. don't know what country you're from but contact the law institute for your country and they will put you in contact with someone who charges like that

As you search around the Internet, you see links to websites and such, almost screaming at you "MAKE MONEY ONLINE!" and what do you do? Well, you already know, from clicking on those links before, that all they want is money. Now that doesn't make any sense at all now does it? How are you supposed to make money, if you have to pay for it? Seems like a lost cause to me. Personally, I hate programs such as that, and I would never suggest something like that to you. But hey, if you're looking to make some money online, 100% free, then this is what you've been looking for.

She can contact "legal aid". They help people who can't afford an atty. They have to choose which cases they take. Lawyers only take contingency cases when they're sure they can win.

That depends on the case or the lawyer. For instance, when I needed a lawyer for my workers comp case he was paid when I got paid, out of the settlement. If this is a dui, battery, robbery, etc. then usually you pay by the hour. I seem to remember that when someone gets arrested part of the miranda rights are that "if you can't afford an attorney one will be assigned to you..." It all depends on the type of case it is. I would contact the State Bar (whichever state your friend is in) and ask about attorneys, referrals after explaining the situation she's in. Hope that helps. Take care.

If you are a true friend tell your friend to NOT hire an attorney !! Most of them are greedy and do 0 for you. They also charge $300 per hour, last time I checked ! What kind of case is this anyway ? Yes, she could try Probono because liars, oh whoops lawyers !, have to take so many of those cases a year. Hey CatLaw- you are funny !!!!

If she needs a lawyer, the state should provide one. If this something she is choosing to pursue on her own, if she has a viable case, a lawyer would take on the case with stipulation that they would be paid after the settlement.

It depends what the case is about...
I know of plenty of lawyers where I live that wait for the settlement and take a cut...
If you don't win they get nothing either.
