Is this legal? I think there was not respect what so ever!?
I got hired for the season, it was a sales position (in store), this is a big company, i worked overnight on black friday, after that i was not schesduled to work again for two weeks, i asked they said it was slow. I waited even when they promised a minimum of 8-12 hours per week. Since I have discount as an employee, today i went to buy some presents, when i was about to pay the cashier was trying to give me the employee discount and he told me i was not in the system anymore, he called the manager and he told me that probably i was terminated (without any reason), he asked me if the person in charge had call me, I said no, he said : you have to call her tomorrow! I dont know if this is legal! i let go other jobs thinking that because this is a big company they will treat their employees better.... i lost the opportunity of working somewhere else. They didn't even call me to tell me.

Sorry .... forgot to say i live in California. It was temporal, just until January. I had to go to orientation , it was not verbal and had to sign more papers than usual, (i work for BoA before and didn't have to sign so many) I even joked ... i said i feel i am buying a car... really it was a lot, they didn't forget any disclosure. So i am thinking, i wasnt in the system today...but they will pay me on friday as a regular check. The first week i receive an email with my schesdule, i thouth it was a mistake and i asked, a supervisor said the person in charge was not doing her work under his point of view and apologized. He said she didn't figure it out yet how many hours she will give the new hires..etc. But it will be ready for this week. Then i received the second email (for this week) and every day is off.

What state do you live in? There may be a rights to work law where they have to have a reason to fire you. If not, then it's legal.

i think that its not legal, if something is wrong they have to let you know and then you will know, but not this way you have to do something about it, for now talk to the manager on the store, and after that do what you have to, goo luck

They shoulda tol you tho. Any employer can terminate your employment at anytime without any reason. But they shoulda told ya.

Everything is totally legal tho, and nothing you can take to court if thats what you're wondering.

It seems like you don't have a contract with that company. That means you are an "at will" employee - to use the correct legal term. It means you can quit at any time or be fired/laid off at any time with no advance notice. It is completely legal unless you have some proof that the company discriminated against you in some way - such as gender, ethnic group, or religion. Then you would need to go through a long legal process to try to get compensation. But in your case, you were probably just working for jerks. There are lots of them in management.

Hrm, I know in some states (like AZ) you can be fired for no reason at all. They don't have to inform you, so it's not technically illegal.

What they did is pretty awful though.

Very rude, not illegal. Make sure you get your pay for when you did work ASAP - there are laws for this and if they don't pay you they are in trouble.

wait so you got fired without notice? i think thats a little awkward... definitely call the manager first, phone is always easier then in person and just straight up ask what the problem is. you didnt do anything wrong and yeah... definitely give them a call!

If you live in a right to work state, then it is perfectly legal, managers can fire you for anything.

Talk to the person tomorrow and ask why they let you go. To me that is just pretty darn tacky. Check with the labor union in your area to and talk with them and see what they say.

It's pretty low that someone fires you without notifying you

I don't see anything illegal about it.

It is a really crappy way of treating you, but not illegal.

I doubt you had a binding contract.

Sounds like you got used for Black friday. Call the Better Business Bureau or Labor Union. I could see it being legal to not put you on the schedule, but to make you an inactive employee without your knowledge? I'd look into it more, if you want to go through the trouble. Are you sure you weren't scheduled and didn't know it, so they put you as a "no show"? Definitely talk to that manager to find out what's going on. Maybe there was some mis-communication. OR someone is not doing thier job correctly and this needs to be noticed.
