Is my company required to pay me for the days that I had to evacuate for Hurricane Ike?
|
My boss is really tight with money. I work for a Polyurethane company in Houston. Family owned. I have all benefits and I work 40 hours every single week, unless I call in, which is never. I have a feeling that she is going to try and not pay us for Sept. 15-18. But our power was out, so its not like we could have come to work. Can she do this? Isn't there a law that requires her to pay us? Additional Details My employer is SUPER rich, so she has no worries like we do. If we could have been at work, we would have been here. Its not our fault that we had to evacuate. People that are on salary get paid no matter what, right? And teachers?

The law requires your employer to pay your for the hours WORKED. So no, there's no requirement to pay you for the days you were evacuated. Sorry.

Hell no. If you didn't work, you don't get paid.
Get over the idea that you have a right to make other people pay you for nothing!

No worries because she is super rich? HA ! She has lots more worries because she has to keep the company operating and profitable to keep people like you employed.
There is no law that says she owes employees for time off work when it isn't possible to work. She could probably just fire some employees or lay them off, and let them go find another job. How's that for an idea? Maybe employees should appreciate that she has financial set back also and is bringing them back to work. If she went out of business she would not have to pay employees for work they didn't do.
Salary employees are contracted for working certain hours to receive the salary.
The only exception is if there is an Employment Contract that agrees to pay wages during business closure. Check the Employment contract for the options offered.
By the way..without power there is still work to do, such as clean up.
