It's not illegal for them not to. Usually jobs that do allow that kind of stuff are state jobs only or office jobs. Most jobs you just call in sick and they have to find someone to come in. That's what it's like to work in the lower class jobs...

sure is legal...the only thing that isn't legal is if they don't provide a 30 min lunch break in the first 5 hrs and then a 15 min break for every 3 after that.

I,m not sure if it is legal it depends where you live. If you are genuinely sick then no-one can force you to come into work and but your company is not legally bound to pay you. Sick pay is at the discretion of the employer, but employers are losing millions of pounds every year with sickness leave which is why most companies opt out of offering their staff this benefit. Unfortunately this has spoiled it for those of us who are genuinely unwell.

It depends, are you employed as an independent contractor (do you get a W-2 or a 1099 at the end of the year)?

Depends on the state I guess. The local employment office would know, and if it is illegal, be the ones to enforce it.

sorry your questions is worded wrong - you use to many negitives. Yes a company can fire you for taking time off for being sick - even if you dont get paid for it. A company has to run its buisness and if you are someone they feel is not going to fit their needs. They can fire you for calling in sick. If it is a right to work state - they can fire you with out a reason - yes its legal. That is why there are unions
Does that answer your question - I mean is that what you were asking?

Unfortunately it's not illegal. All they have to do is pay you for the time you work and pay 1.5 your hourly wage for any hours over 40 in a week. Sorry

Yes, it is legal. If you are unable to get unpaid sick leave, try taking a personal leave if you are sick. If your company does not allow that either, show up to work sick. Either one of two things will happen: you'll be sent home, or you'll stay for the day.
Your company has policy and procedure for this and it should have been explained at the time of hire. If it was not and you have an HR department, contact them for copies of their policy in regards to paid and unpaid sick time. (If there is a company handbook, ask for a copy of that).

It depends. Normally, once you have used up your sick days, you don't get anymore.. and they can let you go if you are sick more often without a doctors note.
If you've been there over a year, and the company is over 50 people in your location, then FMLA may be an option. (family medical leave act) this is a federal law that entitled you to time off unpaid with doctors certification for serious ilnesses. (not runny nosed, headaches, bloating, etc
hope htis helps

I think the companies are in the drivers seat anymore.
They seem to be able to get by with doing all kinds of things that we used to think of as being wrong and illegal.
I worked for a financial institution that did that to their employees, wrong but they can do it as jobs are so hard to find nowadays.

A company isn't required to keep your job for you if you are sick. They can legally fire you if you aren't available to work when you are scheduled, even if you are sick, and even if ou have a doctor's note.

It is legal in most states, as long as this is a policy for everyone (meaning you are not being singled out here). Ridiculous, but legal as long as you live in a "right to work" state. You are only protected if you get you can be deemed legally disabled.
Sorry. Your employer is clueless. I'd say the company is destined to fail with that sort of practice, so you may as well look for another job.

LOL - everyone apparently didn't read the poster's question...he/she is asking if he/she can get time off UNPAID, not PAID sick leave.
As far as the question, what state are you in? Your state's labor and industries department would likely be where you'd wish to report it - or call them to see if what is being done IS legal.
Sorry I can't be of more help than that, but without knowing what state you're asking about I cannot look into it either.
