First you have to earn a bachelors degree. Next, you go to law school and it usually takes three years of fulltime study.

Good luck.

It looks like you're getting answers from people in different parts of the world. I can only answer for studying law in the United States, since that's what I did.
You will have to go through 4 years of undergraduate college first. You can major in anything - it doesn't have to be related to law. For example, I was a psychology major in college, but I have friends from law school who were engineering majors, math majors, English majors, etc.
You need to graduate with a high GPA from college. You also need to score fairly well on the LSAT (the test you take to get into law school). These are the main factors that law schools look at when they are deciding whether to accept you.
Once you get into law school, it takes at least 3 years if you are going full time. It can take longer if you go part-time.
A few months after graduating law school, you will have to take the bar exam for whichever state you intend to practice in. Once you pass the exam (which is very hard), you can become admitted to practice in that state.
So, it will take you at least 7 years of education after graduating from high school to get a law degree. If you go straight through, you can expect to graduate between the ages of 24-26.
Right now, you should concentrate on maintaining good grades in high school so that you can get into a good college.
Law school is a huge investment, and you should be 100% sure that you want to do it before making that choice.
Good luck.

I'm a 3rd year law student and my program is 4 years. I've done 3 in college and on my way to being a 4th year in Uni. . = 7 years of law ugh..lol. I got into college at 17 doing paralegal/law clerk studies and then went on to a 1 year court & tribunal program. You dont have to do all these things...if i were to give you any advice it would be to go for it and not to give up on it. You will be so educated it will become who you are, it will effect the things you say just because you have that extra amount of knowledge....just love it!!

..Sorry for the essay.

In California, law schools almost always demand a four-year bachelor's degree before they will admit you. Law school itself takes three years. After that, you must pass the bar exam to become a lawyer.

The bar exam in California is very difficult. Some people have to take it a few times before they pass it. Others take it a few times, become discouraged, and move on to other lines of work.

If you want to become a lawyer, you should learn how to speak and write well. Legal concepts are expressed in language; and if you can manipulate language well, your possibilities of being a successful lawyer will be greatly enhanced.

I majored in English Literature and Political Science in college. My law schooling was a 3 year program (full time, day student). My husband went to law school in a 4 year program (not full time, night student). He worked throughout law school, whereas I went straight through. He was an economics major in college.

Before you can attend Law School it is preferred that you have a Bachelor of Sciences degree in English. Also if you have the opportunity there take debate and public speaking courses. This will train you how to present yourself in front of a small audience.

Usually a B.S. degree can be earned in as little as two years, but then the hard part is actually getting accepted into law school. Another suggestion would be to try an work part time after school in an actual law firm to learn the various procedures required.

Probate law and civil law are a lot different than criminal law.

Law School itself takes about four years and $150,000. Not to be discouraged but if you do get a part time job in a law firm, there is a good possibility that one of the partners would write a recommendation for you to attend law school. Even while attending law school, if you return during the summer months, there is a good possibility they will have you research case law on actual trials they are working on. Of course you would be under the supervision of one of the junior law partners.

My father was an attorney and retired three years before he died.

That's another thing too. Lawyers usually don't retire until they are up in their 80s, and work long hours into the night preparing for trial.

I also worked as a legal clerk in my dad's office when I got out of the Army, where I worked as a legal clerk as well.

If you would like more information please feel free to email me.
