How many hours in a day is it legal to work?
My friend works in the care profession and her employer has asked her to work from 9am on a Saturday morning to 2pm on a Sunday afternoon with the night time being a sleep in duty on call.
Can anyone tell me if this is even legal to do this amount as it means she is in the building for 29 hours in total.

You can work as many hours as you want to. The only caveat is that various agencies require that you have certain amounts of break time.

If your friend does not like the terms of her job, she is free to leave.

A sleep in is not 'working' as such. On a good night your friend will not be called up and will sleep just as she would at home. There are plus sides to employment in the Care sector, such as job satisfaction, but there are also huge down sides. Most jobs in the sector involve working anti-social hours, weekends, bank holidays, xmas etc. Plus the pay is always crap unless you are working for the NHS.

There is not a set legal limit unless your a minor, otherwise you can work as many hours and you want. Anything after 40 is OT

The working time regulations should come into effect.
Your friend although on call and asleep is still at her employers disposal so regardless of what others may say she is still at work and employed.
Ask your friend if she opted out of the working time regulations when she took the job ? If she did then she needs to discuss with her employer reasonable working hours work home balance etc.

If she didn't then she needs to read up on the working time regulations on the acas web site and contact acas by phone or join a union who will take this up on her behalf.

ALL legal questions should include jurisdiction (where you are)
it is the only way to get a relevant and somewhat accurate answer.............

in most states in the US for most (not all) jobs this is legal for those over 16.
