Friday 13th?
Would it have been an acceptable excuse if I'd phoned my office today and said that I couldn't come in because it was Friday 13th and I was worried about travelling to and from work today?
Additional Details
I do realise it is a superstition.

But religion is a superstition too, and they gave me Easter off

I would say no. Personally, I'd be pretty cheesed off if an employee of mine tried a cop out like that one, mostly just because it's incredibly...half-assed.

No.

You could ring and say, "I've dropped a knife on my foot in the kitchen when I was cutting bread ... can't come in it won't stop bleeding"

Always mention blood and knives on Friday 13th. People fall for it.

BTW . Friday 13th only affects those who are superstitious about it. Personally, I embrace it and consider Number 13 to be a lucky number.

Cheers.

Is it a Boy? Is it a Girl?
fear is not a good enough reason to not go into work.
I didnt go to work today though... yay, day in front of the tv

absolutely not. Nobody is going to exuse that, because thats a "belief" not a "fact". July 4th is a fact, on that day, everybody knows its independance day. Friday the 13th is a day of stupidity that some moron came up with that its bad luck and you fell into that thinking it was true. Its just another day!! A date has nothing to do with anything, work is work, they need you, dont call in and tell them that, they will probobly get mad and fire you. I highly doubt they will let you work there anymore especially if you work in a buisness office, they dont want a child scared of a friday, they want a man that doesnt give a crap about the date and will be there because thats the date he is scheduled to work. Dont be superstitious

Quite possibly, if you convey the idea well enough.

Religion is a belief, as is the fear of Friday the 13th. There's a story behind Easter, Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc. Give a good story, and you could probably score the day off. And if they threaten you with termination, tell them to come work on one of the aforementioned holidays.

But seriously, it's all dependent on the company and the boss. If you really want to, give it a shot.
