As long as you have a doctor's certificate, no they can't. Also, if it is only one day that is not before or after your day off or a public holiday then you don't even need a certificate.

Usually if you provide proof you saw a doctor and you are not temp or on probation they will not fire for sickness. Yes you can be fired for any reason any time.

well I'd say that for the most part I don't see a job firing you for calling sick now they could request a doctors note stating your sick and I'd also say that it would to depend on how often you've called in Sick?? best of luck

Well, if you're in the UK, no, you can't if you're generally sick. Usually, if you take one day off every few months because you're ill, there'll be no questions asked. If you're off for a few days, provide a doctor's note. If you're not actually ill, and are calling in sick, then you're lying, which is sackable.

In our country, SA, you cannot be fired for being off sick, provided if on a monday or friday you being in a medical note. Any other day, if you are sick, and you make sure you let them know, then there is nothing they can do. The most they can do is give you some kind of 1st warning, and if you are unhappy, go to the labour department or the equivalent in your country for free advise and support. I know, i have been through this recently with my work too. Good luck!

If you are really sick again, drop in the office on your way seeing the doctor..... if you are not seeing the doctor, you are not sick enough to call in sick.....

Probably not if you are actually sick. If you are unreliable they may find another reason to fire you but not officially for being sick. They can demand a doctor's note or run a new drug test before allowing you back if they suspect you are lying.

depends or your job, some require a medical note from a doctor, others let it go, but regardless, most places will fire you if you make a habit of calling in sick,

Yes, you can get fired for calling in sick. Employment at will states that the employer or employee can terminate employment without any notice. Since there is no violation of employment at will YES they can fire you.

Business needs to go on so if you can't seem to make it to work, they will find someone else.

If you're really sick there's no problem.
As a "boss" I can tell you, I know when you're bullshitting and the best policy is to not try, it makes you look undependable. I would much rather have an employee call and say "I'm having a real shitty time, could you survive a day without me?" than "*cough* I'm really sick(bad acting included) I need the day off" and I'll show up tomorrow looking healthy as a horse.
Perhaps if you any vacation saved you can request a monday or a friday off and give yourself a three day weekend to relax as well as something to look forward to.

Basically, you can be fired for any reason, except those protected by law.

Being sick is not protected by law.

So yes.

if you are in the US then YES you can.
this is unlikely but possible, a lot depends on your attendance and punctuality as well as job performance.

you can be terminated for excessive absenteeism regardless of the reasons for the absences or whether or not you see a doctor.
