pingu says	take the money and run, use the reference. i think they're doing you a good deal there. 7 months in and they are given you 4 weeks pay by british law i think you only get severance pay like that after 2 years. before that you can get paid of or sacked with nothing but your lying week. andy	No, it sounds like they are doing a major layoff since they are getting rid of half of the shop. I had this happen once when they got rid of a shift. Mel	You really don't - in the US, most employment is "at will", meaning you can be terminated at any time, for any reason, with or without notice. With only 7 months' seniority, 4 weeks of pay is a generous severance package. Take the $$ and find something new. Was this answer helpful to you? Yes / No

Wish Fairy	If no-one else is made redundant then they probably can do that. Although if you were "selected" from a pool of other people who subsequently weren't made redundant you need to ask on what basis you have been selected. Suzy Q	Employers do whatever they want when they want. Most likely they are doing you a favor. God may have something better for you. It happened to me, I was with a company for many years. The company lost their contract to another company, but there was a position I was qualified for at another location. Instead of hiring me they hired someone from Florida and wanted me to take a lower paying position with a wage cut of $2.45. I took the package instead of taking the job. It took me four months to find another job, but the good lord kept my bills paid. I had unemployment and a lump sum they paid me. I finally landed a job at a university making more money. Pam H	No, probably not. They are in business to make money. Their first concern is the bottom line, not what is best for each employee. Shutting down half the shop and shuffling workers around is perfectly legal. You can file for unemployment. Was this answer helpful to you? Yes / No

Cari	In the UK, if you've only been employed seven months then you have no recourse if your employer wishes to make you redundant. You're not entitled to statutory redundancy pay until you've been there two years. The thing with them getting rid of you rather than the other manager is not necessarily to do with costs - most employers operate a policy of "last on, first off" when selecting staff for redundancy. This is the fairest way to do it, and you'd certainly think so if it was you who had been there many years.
