Can an employer just sack you on the spot for being late?
Do employers have to go through a warning procedure before sacking people to give them a chance to improve their ways? OR can an employer just say "you're late....you're sacked???"

Different places have different policies. Private companies are usually quite strict with attendance. But there are places where it is "performance base" where it doesn't matter when you show up, as long as you do, and get your work done on time.

Of course, it is very impractical to just sack someone for being late. Unless that person is always late for that matter. If it is a part time job, or a blue-collar job, yes the employer can sack you due to the fact that you aren't a regular, and not protected by the labor laws.

If not in a union you can be sacked for any reason without warning. So yes you can be sacked for being late, most likely if it is a habit with you

Assuming you are in the US, it depends on state laws, but generally they can fire you for any reason they want, unless it involves discrimination. The real question is if there is a personnel manual and did they follow it. There usually isn't any law requiring warnings or anything, it's just a policy most companies have. So yeah, they can sack you for being late. With the current number of people looking for jobs, why would they waste their time waiting for someone to improve when they can readily hire someone eager to show up on time every day?

If you are in a union, it's a different thing all together.

Definitely, the employer cannot say "you're late....you're sacked". The principles of natural justice require that employee should be afforded an opportunity to explain why he was late. Even if the employee is a habitual late attender, charge memo has to be issued before sacking. It is another thing that employees are sacked on different pretexts.
