Can a employer change your title and respon (demotion) and still require you do current respo w/o you agree?
This company fired a bunch of people then took other staff and demoted them to fired postions BUT required those employees to continue to do their current position in addition to the demoted position. No change is pay (grossly underpayment as is). These were hourly people - most are very upset and looking for other work but is what the co did legal - can yuo take someone who is say a bookkeeper and tell them your now the janitor but you need to do the bookkeeping too? Additional Details Florida is a right to work, so no contract. BUT they are doing this to mostly employees who have been there a long time (10+ yrs) and a few new hires - the last cull about a year or so ago they fired alot of old timers said it was a money thing that the positions were being eliminated then after 3 months they hired new people to fill those same positions that they just fired people from.
That depends on if you are a contracted employee or an "at will" employee-Did you sign an agreement for the type of work you will be doing or a salary agreement? If you are an "at will" employee then you have no prior agreement and your job or salary can change at will.
Probably yes. If you are in a "right to work" state -- they can ask you do about anything. Most job descriptions have the line "all other duties as assigned" to cover any additional work.
is it legal?
YES unless you are covered by a collective bargaining agreement or contract in which case the union would just cause the employer to go broke and everyone would lose their jobs due to the inflexibility.
lucky for you that you have a job with an employer who is smart enough to make cut-backs and change responsibilities so at least some of the employees will have a job and not all end up unemployed.
Unfortunately yes. This has become so common especially in this economy. An employer has the right to change your responsibilities at any time and even lower your salary as long as it applies to the entire staff and not only to lets say a specific minority group (which would fall under Title VII.) Unless you have an employment contract which is unlikely they are allowed to do this.
