CRB delay- will my employer hold the job?
I have applyed for my CRB in november 2008 for a position in mental health. I have had many checks done before but this one is still with the police; it has been since november.

The CRB has apparently been contacting the metropolitan police to send it back but as of yet they have not responded. As it has been over three months the crb have giving me the address of where my checks are being completed, i.e. the metropolitan police. I have sent two letter demanding an explanation as to why my checks are taking a ridiculous amount of time to complete. They have not responded.

Now I am concerned that this could go on for ages - does anyone have any advice as to how best to get speeded up? Both the CRB and the police do not seem to want to take responsibility.

Also does anyone know what my rights are with the offer of job? Do they have to wait until the crb comes back - since it is a provsional offer dependent on the crb??

Natalie your soon to be employer will not pull the rug on you. Think about it, any new applicant would also have to be CRB checked and they would be at the end of the backlog, you must be near the top.

Tell your workplace(soon to be) about it and they will probaby be able to sort it out. If they have already offered you the job they cannot take it away from you for that reason

Call up the CRB office and also mention your letters. They should then prioritise your check, particularly given it has been so long - they do have a HUGE back log to work through. Sometimes they take longer if the check is enhanced, or if there is a query over whether or not to disclose something (which means that particular case is looked into in detail by someone more senior).

As to your job offer, well it's not your fault the CRB is taking so long, so I would stay in touch with your new employers, and let them know you are chasing your CRB. They should be able to put your mind at ease - afterall they won't go through the whole recruitment process and CRB check again with someone new as that would take even longer (not to mention the fact it would not be very cost effective).

If you have had a letter confirming the post is yours, subject to the checks, you have a binding contract with them. It isn't as if you have been rejected.
How do you know it is still with the police?
Three months is a bit long, even by CRB standards. Put your concerns in writing to the CRB.

I don't know how long CRB checks normally take, but I applied for mine at the beginning of December and I don't have mine yet either!

I would just keep writing letters and emailing them, just any form of harrassment you can think of.

The employer is required to keep the job open since they have offered it conditionally. However, usually any conditions such as this can be given a timeframe within which the information must be provided, or else the offer is null and void.

However, realistically they wouldn't now give you a time limit and retract the offer. First, keep copies of letters that you are sending so that the employer can see that you are doing everything in your power to get the completed check back. And second, if they were to retract the offer and give the job to someone else, they'd then face another three-month wait whilst that person got checked, so there wouldn't be any point.
