18, and looking for a job while in college?
Why do you have to give your social when filling out applications?
They don't run background checks till hired right? Or at least a tentative job offer is made?

I'm leary on giving out my social to every single job ap, worried about identity theft. What is the reason for this?

That's just the way it is. They need your social number to make sure you're you, so they're not giving checks to someone who's not really working for them.

Some jobs run checks before you get hired. It just depends on where you go. If it's someplace low on the job food chain, they probably won't.

Also, don't worry about identity theft in this situation. Odds are you're the 1000th person to apply at wherever you're applying. If they wanted to steal an identity, they would've been caught a long time ago.

Most businesses do a basic background check before interviewing so they do not waste their time on unsuitable people. One reason they ask for a SS right away is to check citizenship. Personally, I do not give my SS number until I get hired, but not all businesses are OK with that.

SS sends out forms showing the activity on the account for the last year. Make sure you are getting those and reading them carefully.

If you apply for a job at your school, you can put "on file" instead of giving the actual number.
