The benefit system gives you more if your a single parent, compared to a couple claiming benefit. Its encouraging parents to split up and claim seperately. All parents should be paid equally.

Theres also governmental programmes in place for a single parent on benefits, i.e every weeks they can get to see a job centre advisor, about help into getting back into work, childcare costs, and even an top up bonus of £1000, if they do find work.

Coupled parents claiming benefits dont have this treatment of good will. There is no support for either trying to get back into benefits, no help with childcare, and no back to work bonus.

I know two friends both in differen tsituations, one of them is a single parent, she gets an extra £40 on her income support, she can get a percentage off her childcare, if she goes on a training course, and also get money vouchers to buy a interview suit. On top of that she has the support of the jobcentre to encourage her to find work and get off the system. Her view is that she DOESNT want to work.

Theres another friend, who claims as a couple, her partner is severely disabled. Even thou she has a social worker to support her with her partners needs. She WANTS to go to work. With little qualifications, and experience, the jobcentre are unwilling to support her through her difficult times of job searching. She has no money to buy a nice interview suit, little support for childcare costs, and is unable to go on any training courses with the jobcentre simply because they are only for single parents.

Young, single parents on benefits should work and the state should pay for decent childcare. Barring severe disability, everybody should contribute something to society.

The state should pay for decent childcare because it is in the state's interests to have well cared for citizens. Education can't start early enough, learning to play being the first step.

You might have a good idea there....I agree, I think there should be more input from the parents...before and after pregnancy.

Good question :)

Agreed. I was a young mum, falling pregnant to my then boyfriend of 4 years, at 17 yrs old. I worked hard to bring up my daughter on my own. Completing college, getting a job and buying my OWN home. I have never relied on benefits, nor would i ever wish to. I have worked full time since my daughter was 2 years old as i have too much pride in myself to stay home and scrounge all day long.

One of my friends has NEVER worked a single day in her life. It really grates on me that we whilst we were both young single mums, that is where the similarities end. I choose to pay my own way for me and my daughter - she choose to scrounge from tax payers - free council house, no council tax to pay etc because 'she couldn't work and raise her son'!

There are also those that state that if you have children it is your responsibility to raise them, not leave them with a childminder/nursery to go to work. This is fine IF you can afford to stay home. If you are having to rely on benefits then you cannot afford to have children. End of!

Its a joke. I'm all the proof you need that you can be a young mum AND work to earn you OWN money.

I would organise free nanny system for those who can't afford it so they can work, get them out of benefit.Surely it will be cheaper. They can contribute to maybe a third of the bills.
Single parents are anything from the silly 14 years old girl to people like my friend who at the age of 29 thought they were getting married and all then he take his life few months after the birth. She was never in benefits, she worked hard, but she could do with some help.

Because a country as wealthy as ours should hold itself to a higher ideal, such as the strongest in our society should protect the weakest in our society without judgment. Unfortunately, there will always be those who thrive and abuse government subsidies. However, which is worse a single mother recieving welfare or Viacom, GE, or Boeing receiving massive government subsidies and tax breaks while still posting massive profits. Talk about freeloading. Perhaps you should cast your judgment elsewhere and leave the welfare moms alone. Their lives are hard enough.

it would be great if everyone worked and paid their bills.....

unfortunatly the system in place somethimes makes it " more beneficial " for single mums etc to claim and not work -

Its like people who cant be arsed to work and then wonder why their life is so boring

dont even get me started on politics and drug dealers.......... be here all month..........................

In the first place, these young single parents are now considered adults so to place the responsibility on their parents is not completely fair and unfortunately many times these parents have enough responsibilities on them besides their adult children's mistakes. I do think that the parents of both sides should step in and do what they can though. Young men need to take responsiblity for the children that they bring into the world and any family should do what they can for their other family members whenever possible.

We live in a society of ME though instead of WE and so there is a tendency for families to be dis-united instead of united.

So should these babies suffer? Seems worse than abortion to me.

Fashion, that is not the way it works in the US.

Define young. If you are talking about juveniles (under the age of 18), then the parents (of both the mother and father) should take some of the responsibility because (AND ONLY BECAUSE) they still have the financial responsibility to take care of their juvenile child. Of course, you are assuming that the girl's parents could afford to support their daughter and a new baby as well. That is not always the case, and whether you like it or not, poor children deserve just as much food and shelter as other kids. However, over the age of 18, the grandparents should have no more responsibility. The fact is that young people make mistakes. That does not make them "scroungers" or "freeloaders." While some people will abuse the welfare system, many really need the help. They might have a mental illness or a disability. In fact, many do work but can't make ends meet on a minimum wage salary. Those of us who are fortunate enough to have good paying jobs have a responsibility to help those less fortunate.

Sadly you need to have a license to drive, you need a license to carry a concealed weapon, you need a license to fly, and in some area's you even need a license to own a dog. For some reason you do not a license to be a parent. That needs to change, if you want to be a parent you should be able to prove your finacially, emotionally, phyiscally etc to prove you should be allowed to have a child. Those soon to be parents who can not prove this should have their kids put up for adaption for a couple who can.
