Why is it illegal for me to buy alcohol?
|
I'm a 19 year old college student whom lives in Texas. I drink on weekends and go to parties and have fun, all that good stuff. However, just tonight, I was wondering why EXACTLY should I have to be 21 in order to legally purchase alcohol? Now I use the couple of my friends whom own fake I.D's in order to obtain beer and liquor...but I'm starting to get tired of having to do that. The thing is, when my dad was younger, the drinking age was 18. Now it's 21, and I am having a hard time understanding why the government has decided that 21 is the right age. You would think that if I'm old enough to buy cigarettes, be tried as an adult, and go to war/become drafted by the military that I'd be old enough to buy a cold drink every once in awhile. Yet, the government has not deemed me "responsible" enough to purchase alcohol. I'm responsible enough to vote for the leader of our country, drive a car, pay taxes and go to prison, but not enough to drink a little bit? I just don't understand... Additional Details I realize that it is illegal, but that's not answering my question. WHY is it illegal? I mean, it used to not be illegal...and it's not illegal to have a drink in every other part of the world, so why is it here in the United States? I realize that in other countries where it's legal to drink at a legal age, their legal system is different...but it's not like our government is doing a good job anyways. Our country is in a recession, we're still in a war, illegal immigrants still cover the streets...it's just pathetic. I'm more responsible than roughly 40 percent of 21-year-old adults I meet anyways. Who is the government to say that I am not a responsible individual at the age of 19? I live in my own house, pay water/electric/gas/credit card/phone/internet bills, hold 2 jobs and go to class during the spring and fall. But no, I can't let loose a little bit on Friday night unless my parents or a friend responsible (read: old) enough buys it for me. Why?

It is not yourself the one that law is preventing to buy alcohol. You don't have to take too personally.
Law is stablished to prevent something, based in historical data that shows that certain event is not "positive enough" to be permitted in a society.
So, law of alcohol permits that other "not-as-alcohol-adapted", the oppositive of what you are (and of what most of the grown ups are), drink having cosequences that alter the peace and stability of society.
It is not that you are not capable, but it prevents the others uncapables to stop doing it.
I believe that cheating ID is not correct, so I strongly suggest not to follow your friends in that.
Just wait, be patient, and enjoy it. You will have many many years to drink after 21!!, believe me.

Because some idiots in the government decided that 21 is the magical birthday after which a person becomes "responsible" enough to drink. Never mind the fact that a 16 year old kid can drive a 3,000 pound weapon and 18 year olds can buy cigarettes and join the military.
There are many "why" questions out there that simply do not have logical or reasonable answers. Like, why is cannabis illegal? The reason "why" is that in the late 1930's the government needed a reason to persecute Mexican immigrants due to racism and since many of these immigrants smoked cannabis the government made it a crime. They also started calling cannabis "marijuana" which is a Mexican/Spanish word, again used as propaganda along with other things like telling white women they would become insane whores if they smoked a joint. Pot has been illegal ever since because governments make loads of money when they arrest and incarcerate their citizens. Its the same thing with alcohol, they know people under 21 will do it regardless of the law and they capitalize on this.
Incarceration nation at its finest. Of course, the people giving me thumbs down can't refute these facts. Look it up if you care to avoid being ignorant.

I'm european.. We have a good goverment..
I dont get the ethics behind america and the rest of of the world with the 21 and the 18 yr limits on everything what a load of bullsh*it...
The europeans end up being mature at age 20.. when all you ppl dont stop bindge drinking and being retards at the end of your late 26... its sad that yoru country is trying to take care and prevent.. when there actually doing the dammage...
Like we say.. let them be grownups at 16 and if they handel it they handel it... wich we all do... and by the end of our 20 we are sick and tired of it and grow the hell up. but you guys only start living untill your 21 or 18 making you feel immature and young and no respect from society because your "underdage". i think its a sick sadistic that the gouverment turnes you into Adult with a mind of a 16yr old by the time you 21.. you sad... because you wont think about university when you have become of age but partying and drinking...
its a violant circle for you foreigners... thank god for EUROPE !
Just move out of your ignorant dumb naive country like seriously...

Unfortunately your bros and sisters before you have shown their asses just right in enough ways for the establishment to take the last shot at the youth they can take.
Don't worry , the earlier you start drinking the bigger your chances of becoming an alcoholic or other substance abuser.
All kids hate being young and all oldsters wish they were your age....Hang in there! You will puke too.....!

The funny thing is that it isn't actually illegal for you to drink alcohol.
It's illegal for you to posses it. The 21 year age limit seems arbitrary, though, and I agree that it is out of sync with every other facet of age-based legislation.

Pretty interesting stuff. Hope this helps!

I never liked the reasoning that since you can "die for you country" when you are 18, you should therefore be able to buy alcohol at 18 (I know you didn't use that one in particular, but it's the most common). These are completely irrelevant to one another and I always cringe when I hear someone say it. It's such a lazy argument.
However, I do agree that by 19 years old you should be able to purchase alcohol. That's about the time people get out of high school and start taking on greater responsibilities in their life. Still, with the amount of DUI's and drunk driving fatalities in this country, I'm not sure I want teenagers between the ages of 16 to18 freely getting drunk all the time. Of course, I know there are teens this age that are more responsible than some 30-something-year-olds, but for the most part they are exceptions.
So 19 sounds good to me. Maybe one day drugs won't be so taboo in this country anymore and age limits will no longer be necessary, although I don't think we are ready for that yet.

I know right its so stupid. A buddy of mine in the Navy wasn't allowed to drink and he was being shipped to Iraq and he was like "Yeah they have no problem with me handling millions of dollars worth of equipment that was built specifically for killing people but as soon as I have a beer in my hand I'm public enemy number 1!"

Originally the law was 21 for adulthood and for everything except for the draft which was always 18...then Vietnam happened and the youth rose up on the issue and soon state by state change legislation so adulthood and all laws with it including became 18...When this happened drunk and driving deaths took off this was because some states would allow 18 year olds to drink and others would not...so 18 year olds would cross state lines get hammered and drive back. This is how MADD mothers against drunk driving got started...they are the main culprit to raising the drinking age. They got enough support in the 80s that the federal government decided to withhold highway tax dollars if the drinking age wasn't raised to 21 all the states obeyed. Side not MADD founder disagreed with her own org. and left because of this...

There is something called addiction which is very easy to get at young age. i do not mean that elders do not get addicted. but to a limit elders have a control on mind. when i say elder, it means that your mind is quite matured which naturally happens as you grow up. think that Govt is concerned about your health and do not want you to spoil your health at a young age. you have ample of years to drink. you wouldn't like your child to drink at the age of 19, when you have one . would you

Drinking is bad,,,mm'kay.Young people are already stupid(before you get pissed, realize that I was once young too,so I know what I'm talking about!!!).Combine that with alchohol, which makes even the smartest people ignorant asses(not always but mostly),and the fact that a person's brain doesn't fully develope the ability to accuratley assess risk until the mid 20s makes for quite often a deadly combination. The only good to come out of it is the boom in business for the dna testing centers. You know,,,the place where you go to find out for sure who da baby daddy is?Alchohol is just not a good choice.More bad will always come from it than good. Please trust me on that.I've had a DUI.I have friends that are dead.I have wasted alot of money and time. You can't take any of that back.I wish I could.
