This depends on what state you are in and whether you are charged with a state crime or a federal crime. Under the federal system, you will be charged as an "accomplice" but this doesn't really change the penalty. Most states have this approach as well. But, in Alabama, regardless of whether you are the primary actor or just a helper, you are charged with the actual crime. Alabama has no accomplice theory. In Alabama, if you participate, you're guilty of the actual crime, period.
