What do you think of the ban on extreme forms of pornography?
I believe it came into effect in England and Wales yesterday and carries a sentence of up to 3 years imprisonment.

What are you're thoughts on this?
Additional Details
I believe "extreme" is defined as the following:

(a) an act which threatens a person’s life,
(b) an act which results, or is likely to result, in serious injury to a person’s anus, breasts or genitals,
(c) an act which involves or appears to involve sexual interference with a human corpse,
(d) a person performing or appearing to perform an act of intercourse or oral sex with an animal (whether dead or alive),

I absolutely support it. Graham Coutts murdered Jane Longhurst after visiting sites depicting violent rape, torture and necrophilia.

He stored her body in a storage warehouse, visited more sites and went back to the warehouse to abuse her further.

Only when the body began to decompose did he take it to a forest and try to burn it.

Jane Longhurst was in a relationship with another man, and only knew Coutts because he was the partner of her best friend. Coutts and his supporters have tried to tarnish the reputation of Jane Longhurst in an attempt to make him the victim by claiming that she died as a result of consensual asphyxiation, but the trial showed that Coutts lured Jane to her death, and abused her body for weeks later, hardly the actions of a victim.

Not only did Coutts have a taste for violent pornography, his ex girlfriends testified that he enjoyed strangulation. He will only have met people with similar 'tastes' in the BDSM 'community'.

They have been the most vocal opponents of this law, but its obvious that their archaic rules and regulations spectacularly failed to curb Coutts, and indeed may have fuelled his fantasies.

If someone gets turned on by viewing images of extreme violence then a locked room with bars on the windows is the right place for them. Sadly that's just the type of thing they might enjoy.

Edit
Blackwell it isnt just a lack of ethics or morals, people who enjoy this kind of pornography actually think they are superior to the rest of us, they describe themselves as master this or mistress that. Although we might think thats a bit funny, they take this extremly seriously, and believe that an intrest in violent sex is something which makes them superior to the rest of us, and that the rest of us are simply too stupid to understand.
Most people think they are funny or odd, but as Coutts has shown they are extremly dangerous.

I don't know anything about it, not sure it is necessary (the extreme porn). But I just wonder where are all the free speech, cry baby, bed wetters who gotta cry and wet the bed if you tell them to knock off the racist & **** talk about the President. So in that respect I might want to send a few films to their kids, those "conservative bastards".

Other than that, what are the laws in England regarding free speech? Although I can't see the need for the extreme forms of porn, for any reason.

Very badly thought out legislation, for a number of reasons;

1) Now no-one knows what is legal and what isn't.
2) You can legally practice certain acts with consensual adults, but you can go to prison for looking at a picture of the very same act.
3) There is already perfectly good legislation in place to cover anything too extreme.

This is just a load of tosh devised by Harriet Harman, who believes all men are murdering paedophile rapists by default (see also the change in law on prostitution).

Ban is a bad word. Ban is against freedom of an individual. Too many bans will only hinder progress and development.
The govt. should concentrate on improving safety of its people from terrorism and other forms of violence. Provide basic necessities and look after the general welfare as per the tax received from the public.
The govt. should not become moral policemen and thereafter religious fundamentalists. One thing can lead to another, so it is better to define the powers of the govt. to give in return for what the tax payer pay. Moral standards should not be laid by govt. for everyone knows the govt. is all corrupt and hollow, by the very practice of the system.

i'm not sure whether you're meaning extreme as in violent, in which case the ban is great. but if its not violent and shows consenting adults then i think as adults we should be able to choose what we watch

Rule-Britannia
Is watching it now illegal, or is just illegal to make it?

Either way I disagree with the ban. Most extreme porn is faked to look real anyway so how does that work.

Surely all BDSM porn is classed as "extreme" but both adults are consenting and submissive females enjoy it as well.

In japan there was a study a few years back that showed the availability of "extreme" porn was linked to a decrease of rape cases.

I believe if men can get their desires out if their system by watching porn, then they will be less tempted to do such a thing in real life.

If it is pornography between consenting adults and not available to children, then I have no problem with it.

I dislike pornography but I sure as hell will not tell another they can't look at it. Just not around me, please.

The only reason porn is legal at all is that it is a Jewish-dominated business and they made it into a first amendment/freedom of expression issue in the US. Now they promote political correctness and hate speech legislation to repress their critics.
The real peddlers of obscenity are calling all the shots these days. This is a positive set back for them.

I think its got two sides. for the people who watch it, pollute their minds and get ideas to try it out in real life i think it is a good thing it's become illegal.

But at the same time, how many people are watching this stuff and getting it out their system so they actually DONT end up abusing someone in this way, without that to jack off to, they might start trying to achieve the same thing in real life to some poor girl walking home through the park :P

it's so they can control the internet in the name of 'decency'

when this one fails they'll pull the old terrorism bollocks out again.

they just need some way to control the net.- so network providers have to be liable for something. so outlaw porn.

How are people to know what is extreme or not?.....what is acceptable to some people is disgusting to others. There should be a warning on all illegal sites that it is illegal.....otherwise you could go there without knowing.

I did a lengthy critique of this stuff for another question just the other day. Not to repeat it in full, but there are *many* problems with the statute... Here's just a few:

1. section 64 provides a special defence, which in essence means it's not illegal if the BBFC classify it, even if it does involve an act covered in s63(7) (the (a)-(d) bit copied out by the asker). Why is material suddenly less objectionable because it's been passed by the BBFC?

2. Double standards - its clear from the special defence in section 65 that parliament felt the act might risk criminalising people who engage in "extreme" activities legally, and tape them. Why is that not objectionable? Surely if merely possessing an image of such consensual acts is illegal then performing such acts should be illegal. The exception itself is a can of worms - what about images in safe keeping? what about development? Suppose someone with a section 65 defence gives protected images to someone else to be printed? wouldn't that be illegal under the act? and why?

3. Scope - why just sexual violence? why not all violence? Why specifically sexual violence depicted principally for sexual arousal? Does that mean it's OK if it's depicted as just another form of ordinary gratuitous violence? Why is it just images? what about audio recordings? what about written descriptions? what about live performances (sickening though the thought may be).

4. Calls for views on artistic merits - The obvious defence for a producer of such images is that their principle purpose is artistic, this risks leading courts and juries into making decisions about artistic merit, something the courts avoid doing wherever possible since it is such a changeable and subjective quality.

Some day, law tutors who aren't too squeamish will point to this misguided piece of legislation the same way they do with the dangerous dogs act now.

Once again, "fail statute is fail".
