You people make it seem like president Bush himself is going through billions of phone records for his own enjoyment. It's not as if anything you said was recorded unless you were a suspect, the Intelligence community is probably trying to track down a few people that they want to look for but reserve the right to look at other peoples records to try and triangulate terrorists, if you are not a terrorist then zip it and let the country protect you.

YEAH SAY THE WORDS...BOMB...TERRORIST...SUBWAY ON THE PHONE AND SEE WHERE THAT GETS U? THE STATES HAVE BEEN LISTENING TO OUR CALLS WELL BEFORE 911.. ITS A SHAME BUT IF THEY MUST LISTEN TO MY BORING CALLS THEN HAVE AT IT..REALLY ITS A DISGRACE BUT IN THIS DAY OF AGE I THINK A BIT NECCESSARY UNLESS U HAVE S.THING TO HIDE.

I doubt he has looked at everyone's phone calls - with more than 200m Americans, he wouldn't even have time to sleep much less do anything else if he did that! More like he has the ability to check everyone's phone records but I suspect his underlings are only looking at the more suspect calls. I know the NSA has software that is capable of picking key words and phrases mentioned in calls and these are the ones that are selected for closer scrutiny, along with calls to suspect numbers, etc.

I am not American but it would not bother me if the British Government decided to do the same thing. I have nothing to hide.

First off, he's not looking at EVERYONES phone records. He hasn't checked out mine and probably hasn't checked out yours, unless you have ties to the foreign lands we are against. I don't think that Americans know what they want anymore...you complained that we didn't have enough security when 9/11 happened, and then when airport checks got more intense...everyone got upset because it takes too long. Now the phone record thing...same thing. You want security in America, then stop complaining about the measures taken to get it. The President and his people don't care about you having a conversation with Billy-Bob down the road...most likely, unless you are involved with some terrorist group, your phone is not tapped and is not being checked. Get over it already!

President Bush is NOT looking at "everyone's phone call records since 9-11". Neither is his staff doing this either. What the law does is give them a RIGHT to look at phone call records IF it helps to catch a prospective terrorist.

The whole point to this is to stop terrorists BEFORE they can do something. It's easier to stop something before it starts than to sit back, wait for something bad to happen, and then react to it.

In the case of President Bush, he cannot win. If he does proactively put measures in place, they go after him for "invading our privacy". If he doesn't put measures in place, then he gets murdered in the press because he didn't do anything to stop terrorism.

All this is about is the democrats trying to use every situation to win votes in the upcoming elections. They don't have any better answers so they run down the president thinking they will get votes and be elected.

The problem is with the people.
We Americans elect the president and the members of Congress.
Those elected officials work for us, we don't work for them.
Something terribly wrong happened after September 11th (which in no way do I wish to denigrate - that day was horrific) and it happened so subtly.
At that time, many Americans decided it was better to give up a few of their freedoms for a little security by allowing the president and Congress to pass the Patriot Act.
Unfortunately for Americans, we tend to forget the bitter lessons of history.
We have no one to blame but ourselves.
Here's a quote to ponder, from one of America's greatest leaders:
"The man who trades freedom for security does not deserve nor will he ever receive either." - Benjamin Franklin

i doubt he lisitened to every single tape with each call on. He probably only listened to a few then passed it down to the poor secretary to follow up the rest and perhaps write up a brief report of the contents of each call.

I don't think he actually personally sat down and did that himself. He, and others in OUR system, allowed it. It's called corrupt politics. It's been corrupt for ages, it just keeps becomming more apparent.

ok folks. lets use our brains here. there are 300 million+ Americans in this country, who make an average of five phone calls a day, resulting in 1.5 billion phone calls every single day. Do you really think that George Bush himself is actually reading word for word 1.5 billion phone calls every single day? Or are you just some BS conspiracy theory idiot asking stupid questions because you dont know what else to do with your points?

I'll vote the latter.

First of all this is another gross exaggeration. They aren't looking at every ones calls. Second I think it is a small price to pay for national security. If we can catch the perpetrators by something as simple as tracing phone calls then I am all for it!!!

Unconstitutional is all. Of course disregarding the constitution has never been a problem for Bush. He has broken both domestic and international law and I hope that someday he has to answer for it.
