They have a corrupt government and an economy controlled by about 100 wealthy families. The people in power have no motivation to change things because it would be too expensive, and the citizens have no power. How then would you suggest they get their act together?

The rest of the world......including us, have turned a blind eye to Mexico's problems. We bend over backwards to help a long list of 3rd world countries, but why are we ignoring Mexico?
I'll tell ya why. Mexico gets more help from us in the form of family members coming here (illegally or legally) to work and send money to their families in Mexico than our government is willing to do.
In short, it's a conservative value that is applied here in that the Mexican people, through hard work and determination plant their feet solidly on the ground, rather than sit back and let some government program bail them out.
Mexico would do just fine were it not for one of the most corrupt governments on the planet. It's their own leaders who pocket most of what comes in in the form of legitimate revenue, i.e., tourism, which would be plenty to sustain the whole country. Not to mention the drug money that lines already deep pockets.

It is so unlike the u.s. that has no drug wars, no crime, no rural people without health care and no immigration problems. Right now, if my choices were living in Detroit or in Mexico City, I would have a hard time deciding.
