Question for non-smokers...?
I'm interested in how non-smokers feel about an issue that, to me, is the most controversial: marijuana and it's illegality.

Please answer these questions:

1. Do you think marijuana should be legalized/decriminalized?
2. Do you find marijuana to be better or worse than legal vices (tobacco, alcohol, etc)
3. Do you know or are friends with someone who uses pot?
4. Do you believe marijuana has medicinal uses?
5. Is the war on marijuana (or all drugs) unjust?
6. Any other info/opinions you may want to add?

Here are my answers:

1. I can't say for sure. If it must be legalized, it should be done with careful preparation, as in months and months of planning and done as slowly and cautiously as possible.

2. To me, it doesn't matter if it's worse or better since it's still a drug and many that use it seem to have a poor outlook on life.

3. I don't know anyone that uses it personally and judging by their immersion in the whole 420 culture, I don't think I want to bother with them. A lot of them seem to make their hobby the center of their lives.

4. Again, it doesn't matter if it's better than other vices and has medicinal uses, because you're still getting high off of it even if it does take away pain or whatever. If someone could prove to me otherwise that medical patients don't typically get high off of it, feel free to let me know.

5. I've always thought that the Drug War was a war that was never meant to end, but not one to immediately give up on. I understand where users are coming from about how it infringes on their civil rights and wastes billions of dollars, but that point is made mute because their drug use isn't really doing anything to benefit them. Patrick Henry once said "Give me liberty or give me death"... and he eventually got death anyway.

1. No
2. Worse, except for alcohol. Kind of debatable, I don't mind drinks or drinkers but I don't like the high # of vehicle accidents and deaths it has caused).
3. Now, no. In my teens, most of the neighborhood teenagers were users of some kind of substance, mostly marijuana.
4. Never used it so I can only guess. From what I have heard it can make you physically numb and, like aspirin I suppose, can take away the sensation of pain but will not actually make the cause of the pain disappear.
5. Depends on how harmful it is to others. Cigarettes should stay legal, alcohol should be deemed illegal or have higher restrictions.
6. I've been a smoker (cigarettes, which are thankfully still legal) for the past 10 years and I am sickened by the fact that all these non-smokers are trying to force us to give up smoking against our will. I'm tired of them trying to use commercials involving little children to get people to quit through the use of unjustified guilt, them taking away our rights to smoke in public buildings and attempting to take away our rights to smoke on public streets, and that they continue to keep raising taxes on cigarettes to make them less affordable in order to force smokers into quitting by use of immoral economic practices. It's all just a means of forced control in order to get what they want and it is unethical in the manner with which they are doing it. I am sick of non-smokers who try to make smokers feel like our rights to smoke are not important but that their rights to force us to live their lifestyles against our will is not only important but approriate. I am tired of being told that I should apologize to them for my habits and my actions concerning smoking cigarettes, that I paid for with my own money, that I earned with my own tired hands and sweat.

1. I believe it should be legalized, marijuana is not an overly harmful drug like heroine, i personally would classify it along with cigarettes and alcohol. If the mob is making money off these paraphernalia, why not make it legal so our government can make the money? Anything deemed "illegal" only allows the mob to make big bucks.

2. I don't think whether it's worst or not, some argue there is no dependency like smoking, but my belief is that it entirely depends on the individual

3. I have friends who uses it. I personally don't. Some are cool to hang with, others have ruined their lives.

4. not sure as to whether it has medicinal purposes, but it's because of this, i know someone who asks her doctor to get her a medical card so she can legally purchase marijuana - either way ppl are getting it whether it's for medicinal purposes or not

5. of course it is unjust but as long as there's a profit to be made even at the expense of another individual's life, the war will not end. Like i have previously stated, as long as it's deemed illegal and there's a demand for it, then there's a profit to be made, hence the wars.

1. Yes--it should be legalized.

2.The spirit of all vices is the same. If used in moderation there is no problem with any of those things--it's the overuse that leads to problems.

3. Yes, I know many people who smoke pot. They, for the most part, do not make it the center of their lives--though a few do.

It works like any other hobby would: most people are fine but some take it too far. (I can't count the people I meet who will talk about nothing but football!)

4. I don't know. That's why we have researchers; and they tend to conclude there is medicinal benefits.

As far as you're claim that it should not be used medicinally because people still get high... hospitals treat pain with morphine--that gets people much higher than pot ever will. Even over-the-counter cold medications give some people a "buzz".

5. It's not so much unjust as pointless. The war on drugs does not stop the use of drugs.

Legalizing marijuana would save money spent on the war on drugs, increase tax revenues (by taxing the sale of legal marijuana), and would allow for the regulation of production (people don't know what they're getting with street drugs).

6. I don't know how you can say drugs are of no benefit to users. They're called recreational drugs because they are used for recreation. True, it's probably not the best choice one can make--but it's a choice people should be able to make for themselves.

Choosing someone vices for them would be like telling people what music they can listen to or games they can play.
