They were beatniks in 1962. Hippies came later, maybe as early as '65. But not in 1962.

There weren't hippies anywhere in the world in 1962. The movement didn't start until the mid- to late-60s.

After brief research, I noted mostly the UK protests were against nuclear weaponry. The Vietnam protests didn't come until much later.

You may want to move the time of your story up a couple years. In 1962 the Kennedy assassination hadn't happened yet, no one knew what our involvement in Vietnam was to become, and the hippy movement hadn't started yet plus the Beatles were still covering rock and roll songs. The full power of the civil rights movement was in it's early works. The things that would give the hippy movement fire were starting to rattle, but 1962 was still a good few years away from flower children.

Why do you assume that there were any protests at the time?

There was no war - Vietnam hadn't escalated, Suez was in the past.

There may have been protests from the right - the feeling that led to the famous "River of Blood Speech" in 1968.

Most protest was creative - fiction and art that didn't conform to tradition.

Vietnam war!!!! I can tell you how i've seen people protest in movies: marches of mass protesters, maybe even violent threats. however i wasn't there so idk. There's also the civil rights movement too! but those were in America..

British protesters of the 1960's were unrelated to American Hippies. Some were Youth International Party (Yippies), but all else was completely different. At the time, the British Punk Movement (not merely a music fashion fad as it was in The States) was protesting for worker rights. The British Punk Movement (and its iconic Rock Groups, the Rolling Stones and The Who) date back to the 1950's, so by 1962, things were well underway over there. There was no European involvement in the American Vietnam War, so few protesters cared about "The War". Some of the protesters were Welsh coal miners, and other Labor Union members. Clashes were often violent, pitting the Working Class against the upper classes. In the end, the English Parliament became dominated by Labour Party members, especially in the Lower House (House of Commons). These MPs elected Labour Prime Ministers, including Edward Heath, and labor laws became more worker friendly for awhile. But in the economic recession of the 1970's, the political landscape changed again, and finally, in the 1980's, Conservative Party members elected Margaret Thatcher (Iron Maggie) as the British PM.

Hope all of this helps.
