While it may break her heart to do so, the life of those children are at issue, not her guilty conscience. She has nothing to feel guilty about. Ask yourself how she would feel if he was in a car crash and one of the children were injured or killed. Of course she is doing the right thing.

Definately! And Keep the grand kids out of his car! He needs to be stopped before he kills himself, the grand kids, or anyone else! She should report him everytime she knows he's drinking and driving! He may get mad, but let him, in the long run she's doing him (and who knows who else?) a huge favor! I lost half of my family in one accident! (6 in the car, 5 died!) because of someone who just left a bar!

YES, she is doing the right thing and NO the grandkids should NOT be allowed in a car with this man.
However, I highly doubt the police have the time to track and follow one specific license plate number. So it probably didn't do a damn thing, unless he gets pulled over on his own account, they may have record of her call.

Yes, not only may he be putting your children at risk but he is putting other motorists at risk by driving drunk. If he isn't driving drunk then there is nothing to worry about, only an embarrassing inco0nvience for him. Just don't let him know that he's been reported, he would feel very betrayed.

yes, she is DEFINITELY doing the right thing. She is a very brave person, because blood is thicker then water. But as someone who grew up with an alcoholic father, she is prob. tired of having to worry about him hurting himself, or more importantly, someone else. ESPECIALLY his grandchildren. She is doing the right thing.

its a very good idea, did she confront him first? theres no excuse for drinking and driving, he needs to be arrested to teach him a lesson .

Unfortunately, they can't really do anything unless they see him driving eratically, or you know he is drunk at that moment and call it in. But, at least it's a start.

She did the right thing.
As hard as it may have been, he could get himself and other people in a lot of trouble if he got into a car accident, or was driving drunk at all.

So far the only sensible, non-reactive answer in this whole post was the person who said to stop letting the grandchildren ride with him, take the keys away and talk with him BEFORE involving the police.
I can't believe how many people are getting all excited that she called the cops... and saying it was the right thing.
Her father battled alcoholism and was successful at it for nine years, right? Doesn't he deserve the respect of at least a conversation and an intervention first? I agree that drunk driving is very bad, and putting your own grandchildren in danger is even worse. But your wife owes her father more care and true concern. She should try to help him get into a program, not complicate his life even more.
And one more thing. If the grandfather is 'driving the children around' either it's because he cares about spending time with him or he's doing you guys a favor and babysitting. Either way he's being a good grandfather. He just has a problem. A dangerous problem. But at this point it's something that should be solved by loving family support, not forced police involvement.
But yes, take away his keys until this is resolved!
