kgsgolf	Because w/o a drivers license they can't get insurance. So, since in order to work they will drive anyway, which one would you rather have a fender bender with? Or w/o a government issued ID they can't get a bank account so none of their income would be reported and taxed, again you choose. There is no simple answer. I realize we cannot have a flood of unregistered aliens but knowing who is here and holding them accountable seems preferable. P.S. Born and raised in "Da Bronx" Was this answer helpful to you? rickinnocal	Because it's politically popular with a certain segment of the population. That is one of the things that the Real ID act addresses - it requires States to verify the legal residency of people before they issue them drivers licenses. Effective in May, a Drivers License from a State that isn't complying with Real ID - currently including Oregon - will no longer be an acceptable form of ID for the Federal Gov't. That means - among other things - that you won't be able to use it as ID to board a plane, enter a Federal office building or a Military base, open a bank account at a Federally regulated bank, etc etc etc. Richard Was this answer helpful to you? Hillary	It depends on your point of view, but the idea is that if they're not on the road to citizenship yet and they're here, they might as well have a license (i.e., learn how to drive safely in America, plus make it easier for authorities to find out how many immigrants we have). little78lucky	Oregon has been giving illegals driving license for a very long time..the reason they are thinking of no longer doing this is because congress recently passed a law stating that any state that gives license to illegals will loose a percent of federal grant money for roads, and that percentage of money lose will go up each year they continue to offer license to illegals Was this answer helpful to you? Mendi8a	thats easy, to document them. More states should allow this, if you register with the govt and then drink and drive or hit and run then its more likely that you will be caught. Not to mention that its easier to count how many illegal immigrants are in that area. I cant think of how them having a license could be a bad thing. Saul Tigh	It's not that the law in those 4 states specifically allows illegal aliens to get drivers licenses. It's that there is nothing in the current law prohibiting them from getting licenses. That was the case in Florida a few years ago. After, I think it was 2004, any non citizen applying for or renewing a license had to show proof of legal presence in the US. Think for Myself	First of all there are 2 ways to be illegal. 1) You have no documents at all (or false ones). 2) You come on a visa, travel, student, temporary work etc. With the latter, number 2 can get a drivers license because you have a foreign passport, which is a legal ID, and then over stay your visa. Undocumented illegals could easily be found any day in traffic court, as they do not have a DL. If I were INS, this is a easy place to grab the UD illegals. Not giving DL's to immigrants with visas is dumb. A high school kid comes here for a student exchange program or college, he needs a DL. He may need a car and car insurance. So, what are they really going to do. For UD illegals to drive without a license and insurance? Can you imagine what the car insurance will be for uninsured drivers in OR? We need to close the border and find out who is here and deal with it. These half-a55 laws are stupid. If a DL is a valid ID, then it should state your INS status. "Here on Visa" and expire with the visa does. Otherwise, you don't get one. Just like JO DL is lots of states say UNDER 21 UNTIL <birth date> If it says "Here on Visa" you can't vote. jackson	It comes down to the federal Real ID act. Some states have tried to resist but apparently 2008 is the deadline but some states can just begin it in stages until full compliance by 2010. Basically it means that when you get or renew ANY ID all of the documents have to be verified and the social security will be checked. If a state has not complied the states ID is no longer usable for travel or entering any government building. So how are the state lawmakers going to be able to conduct business. It really comes down to money. The feds are going to deny or seriously delay any federal dollars. Some states are vying for money needed to fund Real ID. That is why many are scrambling to erase old laws concerning illegal ID. Some are enforcing laws passed years back on the state level.that were never enforced...... like checking social security #s. That is what a liberal state like Oregon is facing. Take a political stance against the inevitable and lose untold millions in funding...... or comply. If you were a politician what would you do? You might fight the laws just so you could tell your constituents "I tried". But knowing that money and political survival depends on the inevitable. Hope I did not bore you.
