I would hand it in to the local police station.
It might be the proceeds of crime, or connected to a crime.
If not claimed - I would give the money to charity.
I would like to think that if I had lost something that others might hand it in.
Oddly enough our local police hold auctions of unclaimed found property or property taken from burglars theives etc.

Did just that with a bag with £7000 in it found in the street.
Gave it to the police and got a receipt for it as it could have "disappeared" while in police custody. It was claimed 10 days later and I was given £1000 by the owner for a reward. He gave it for the recovery of the money and an extra amount for my honesty. I kept £500 and gave the rest to a family that were on hard time due to job loss.

Yes, I would hand it in to the nearest police station (or at least I hope I would). I would assume that anybody who lost a wallet containing that much money would report it missing and give a good description of the contents. Besides, these days if you found such an item you would most likely be the victim of some dumb reality tv show.

Yes I would. I have found a couple of wallets before and handed them in.
I always think how I would feel if I had lost money that I had worked hard to get. The person who lost the wallet may have been on the way to get there first car or need the money for something else important. If I lost a thousand I’d be screwed and therefore wouldn’t want to do it to anyone else.

Yes its not my money and it could be someones life savings.
I would also get a signed receipt from the Police, and an assurance that if the money was not claimed after a reasonable time I would be entitled to it.
( It would be interesting to see a comparison of UK vs American responses - ie who are the most honest ?)

Yes I would turn the wallet in even though there is not an ID in it maybe someone will find out that they are missing a wallet and then they could go to the police to find out if anyone turned it in

I would hand it in , to the police ;
they would give me a receipt
, if it was not reclaimed, within 3 months .
. i could then claim the money .
.
If it is reclaimed by the legitimate owner
( he/she would need, to prove, that the money is there's , and how they came by it . )
I would still be entitled , to a percentage of the money
should the money , be proved to have been taken in a robbery ,
( marked notes , from a bank or shop etc.)
It will be kept as evidence , until there is a conviction
After the court case,
The money Will be , returned to the rightful owner ,
a percentage ,will be paid to the finder .
ME!!!! :)
The option of 'pocketing '' the money , however tempting ,
is fraught with the guilt .and danger, of being found out .
You could be charged with theft,
and get a criminal record.,( stealing by finding )
the original owners of the money ,
may be desperate criminals ,ready to do you serious harm
Best option is;
to hand the money ,in to the police
(keep the receipt.)
and await events , with a clear conscience.

Yes. If it doesn't belong to me then it's not mine irreguardless if there is no ID in it.If you were to break into someone's house and take their belongings would it NOT be considered stealing if you didn't know the homeowners?

I think the law says you have to turn it in to the police, they keep it for a while, and if it is not claimed by the owner you get to keep it. Thats probably the best thing to do. If you want to go an extra step, maybe place an ad in the classifieds, or put up some posters in the area. Someone could totally need that money, they might have been on their way to pay their rent, or to pay a doctor for medical treatment. Its best to play it straight. I found some money once, it was never reclaimed, so I got to keep it.

Yes. I've found cash before, and turned it in. There was no ID or anything with it - just a bundle of $20 bills on the sidewalk. Nobody claimed it after the time period expired, so I got to keep it.

I would definitely hand it in. It may belong to someone who has worked their behind off for that money and he/she was on their way to pay for their old mother to live in a perfect old age home. Or it might belong to someone who was on their way to pay off all their accounts, i am honest and it would worry me to death knowing i have stolen someone elses money. I would hand it in.:)))

Yes, last summer I found a wallet, it had not thousands but £135 plus numerous credit cards in it. I suspected that it had been recently dropped and I walked about one and a half miles in the hot sun along the sea wall to find the people that had dropped it. They had not even missed it,but I made sure they were the proper owners before I handed it over. I have found many things in my life (I'm 72) including a real diamond necklace which was a 25th wedding present, hand bags with money and phones in etc.Wallets on trains and a gold wedding ring lost at a wedding reception.I've never wanted or received any reward, except for the diamond necklace when the owners gave me a bottle of whisky, but I don't drink, so I gave it to my neighbour.

Yes I would hand it in. My concience would make me, it is the right thing to do. What goes around comes around in this life. The kindness of people amazes me sometimes, I have lost loads of things in the past and it usually gets returned to me through the official channels. If I didn't hand it in to someone I would be doing those people a disservice.
Think how you would feel if you lost a wallet full of cash. You don't know where it came from. It could belong to a criminal or it could be the life savings of a poor person but we are not in a position to speculate on that. Hand it in and carry on with your life with a clear concience!!

I'd post a lost and found ad. If someone could tell me the exact amount and describe the wallet, I'd hand it over. If no one claimed it after 2 weeks, I'd keep it.

Of course, it's not mine I don't want it and if it's unclaimed, then I have a right to it legally; and hopefully the owner will get it back.

Yes of course I would...! The last time I found a wallet, I handed it immediately to the nearest police station. It contained over £1200 cash along with some credit cards (one of which was unsigned..!) and at no point did I even consider keeping the contents. The man who later that day claimed it, was generous enough to give me a fifty pence reward for my trouble..! This helped replace some of the two pounds I used on bus fares instead of buying my kids dinner that day. So instead of starving they had half a tin of pedigree chum to eat and the satisfaction they had helped their fellow man...!
Hoorah for the Rt. Hon. Mr.T.Blair (as was his name) and gents of his ilk. For it is their kind that make me proud to be British...!
