If I transfer a prescription to another pharmacy do they call the original pharmacy?
or the prescribing doctor? Which one do they call?

Also, what information do they need to get from the other pharmacy/prescribing doctor?

Depends on the state.

Certain states...when one pharmacy calls another...the whole thing is considered transferred.

In certain states, only a refill is transferred and the original pharmacy is still considered to have hold of the original prescription.

Others only allow one transfer per prescription, so if you transfered the script once..you may not be able to do it again.

Honestly, the best bet is to get you physician to call in a new one to the pharmacy.

Yes the pharmacy you are requesting the prescription (Rx) from can get it from the original pharmacy holding the Rx, they have to hold the original for at least 2 years (it is only good for 1 month, 6 months, or 1 year depending on the class of controlled substance).

If you have already transferred it, then then would need to call for a new Rx from the physician. Some states like NY only let one refill be transferred at a time, sometimes it is easier in this case to get an original from the physician. But most states let the Rx transfer carry all of the refills. A transfer of a controlled substance can only occur once.

The Rx information required:
Patient Name
Drug, Strength, Directions, Amount
Number of refills given and # left,
original prescription day written, last refill day
Physicians name, DEA #, address, phone number

If the pharmacy is in the same area or a national chain, they may have some of the physician information but will confirm it with the liscenced pharmacist trasferring the Rx.

They call the pharmacy you are transferring from to make sure the Rx is still valid, if there are refills left and all the Rx info that they need to fill it (Dosage, medication etc).
