catawhumpus	Every person on earth who owns slaves, or has, should apologize and set them free at once. No one can speak for the dead, the South went up in flames and anything left was looted or stolen by carpetbaggers afterwards. Funny how people who want apologies for long dead people's actions are so silent on the issue of slavery still being practiced today? But heck, right after I get my apology check for my indentured servant ancestors, my slaughtered and/or exiled Highlander and Ulster Irish ancestors, and my Native American ancestor's land payment, I'll gladly hand it over to a descendant of a African American slave. It's just another "wah-wah-wah give me money" ploy because they've been replaced by hispanics as the largest minority. And before anyone starts in on parts of the USA formerly belonging to Spain, they just stole it from the natives same as any other European country, what makes them so special? Wondering	John Howard is that you?! Hahaha! I'm guessing this "apology" is a bit like Reconciliation in Australia and saying "Sorry" to the Aboriginal community (something the Prime Minister is yet to achieve). You're not being asked to apologise as if it is fault. It's not even an apology...it's showing sympathy for what happened. Eg. Hell alot of us in the north had a harder time getting a job then the blacks did. That's how the irish mobs were started. People giving me thumbs down really need to read a history book. I hear no outrage from the worlds Black population and note no Blacks returning to Africa to fight slavery and the myriad of woes found universal on the African continent.. Centurion	Dude, why should anyone have to apologize for it. Nobody alive today were slaves or owned slaves. We need to just get over it and deal with it. It is a part of our history and to dwell in it is wasted time and energy. One reason we cannot seem to end racism is because "Black Activist's" won't let it alone and they keep trying to whip the black community up into a frenzy over crap that happened long ago because they have nothing modern day that they can use. I do not demand an apology from christians for their treatment of my pagan ansestors. I do not demand an apology from the straight community for the historical bad treatment of gay people. Chris	You are right!!!! I don't care if my great, great, great, great, great, great grandpa owned 312 slaves, abused them or killed them. I was not raised to hate blacks nor do I. I know many black people and I feel I owe them no apology and for the most part I'd say blacks don't feel they need an apology. I think a lot of black people are embarrased by those who whine about the past and point fingers. dorna m	absolutely right!! i definitely disapprove of it but how can i apologise for somethign i haven't done? it's ridiculous - it was a whole other bunch of people who kept slaves - my apology would be completely worthless as i didnt know any of them. you couldnt even say that im a descendent of slave keepers. my family is a poor mining family and i dont see how they could ever have afforded to buy a slave. why aren't the governments of the countries who willingly sold their own people to slavery asked to apologise? after all, no one could have bought if they weren't selling.
