It can be done, however, it may not be admissible in a court of law. It depends on the state, varying states have varying laws about this. Some states require the "taper" to inform the person/people being taped prior to the start of the conversation, and in other states that's not required.

if someone were to tap your phone line you wouldn't know
it. devices used for tapping a line don't give off any indication. it is more likely a bad connection or telephone instrument. being a telephone man since 1968 the only taps i have ever seen are test monitoring by a qualified technician. unless you are in a strange or illegal situation i have found it is more a case of paranoia.

Yes it is possible. But there is no need of ordinary tape recorder the latest technology has solve the problem and mini recorder can also be attached to telephone devices.
How to find if someone is listening or recording?
Keep talking over phone as usual, let the other person disconnect the phone first you keep listening, if you hear any sound, click or beep then it confirms something is going wrong. But another possibility which I can think is some problem in lines.

Now days Your calls can be tapped without causing the click and buzzes so it may be just a bad connection so it can be difficult to tell.

The beeping/clicking could be a variety of things.
1. Portable phone. Try changing frequencies. Remember, they have an antenna and pick up signals, even "clicking" from general house electricity.
2. The particular system that generates your dial tone. Sometimes the "cards" (channel units) go bad.
3. Is this a recent installation? Sometimes the outside lines haven't been disconnected where they worked before. A phone repairman can figure that out.
4. Is there easy access to your Network Interface Device (phone box, usually outside)? Someone could plug in there.
5. Are there any "electric fences" nearby? The kind used to keep horses in? They generate a "click" which can be picked up.
My guess is that you're not being tapped. A phone company tech. should be able to help out.

You can't know for sure. There are some devices that don't tie in to the wiring anywhere. Radio Shack sells one that's simply a suction cup which attaches to your handset near the receiver, and you plug it into your tape recorder, computer or other submini jack.
If it IS a device that's plugged directly into the line, the "clicks" that are heard are because of the voltage changing on the phone line.
Federally approved devices for monitoring and/or recording phone conversations used to be required to generate a tone every 15-20 seconds to let you know you were being recorded.
Under most state laws now, as long as at least one party to the conversation is aware of the phone conversation being recorded, it's legal.

Fact :if its a government agency you will not be able to tell, if its a privet eye doing illegal tap many ways to tell, clicks, a double Dial tone when dialing out, home depot sells a tool that lets you know if some other line is in use, but need not to worrier cause many times its a squirrel that has eaten through a line or a rat, and this will cause many of the same symptoms, if you suspect it is don't use the phone company use a privet agency to do this and the Will check your system out,

Does sound like a phone tap to me. Maybe it's the hubby, maybe it's Homeland Security. Yes, not only is it possible--a 12 yr old w/ a hobby in electronics can do it.
There is a gadget you can put on phone that can detect a phone tap. Best place I'd say to find it would be at a Radio Shack or any electric home security/surveilance business (and yes, they ARE out there). Search the Yellow Pages. Good luck.
If you fail in this mission the COMPANY will disavow any knowlege of your employment or existance. This tape will self destruct in five seconds....four....three....two....

Lucid sounds close enough although this type of tap may not be monitored by the phone company.
It is alleged that the phone company has an automated sensing unit that when it senses an 'illegal or legal tap' on your phone line, it should alert you by emitting a 'beep' every 30 to 60 seconds.
Other indicators would be a very hollow reception, which will be extremely 'quiet.' Jose

I don't know if this holds true today, but there used to be a special requirement for legitimate phone call recording devices. I'm referring to ones used by reporters or insurance adjusters or other lawful entities who need to record business conversations.
Every 15 seconds or so, a legitimate phone recorder is supposed to issue a beeping tone, mostly to remind both parties that the conversation is being taped. The only exceptions to that rule were government agencies working under some form of legal warrant. If you listen to tapes of legitimate phone conversations, you'll often hear this beep in the background.

It is illegal in most states to tape with out notifying the other party which is why when you call call centers they say "this call may be recorded" etc. It will not be admited to court if you are in a state where this law is. You would be able to have it struck down if that is the case. It is also illegal to wiretap a phone in general without a judges order. See link above.
There are many bugging methods and with the state of technology today it is highly unlikely that you will hear clicking like in the old days on your phone. Likely you would never know.
If she is really concerned I would advise hiring a privet investigator who is knowledgable in this area to do a walk through of her home for her. He could check this out.
If it is her husband and they have this level of nonexistant trust I would actually just get out of the relationship asap.

Yup. Sounds like the phone's tapped. Mine used to be, because I lived right above a strip club. It sounds like someone's picking up the phone or something. I thought it was me being paranoid, but after I moved out the sound stopped. Sometimes I'd hear my own voice faintly in the background, but I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it.

first off the law in each state is different so don't rely on the old ' they have to inform you' line, that's bogus.
Second, if your not guilty of anything, you can't get caught. Sounds like someone's guilt is causing them to worry.

We had loud buzzing noise on our line in our new house, back when we had a telephone modem. The phone company came out and checked the connection box on the back of the house and brought back a tiny ear-bud and wire. Someone had attached it to the phone connection to listen to calls and just curled it up into the box.
Unfortunately, the wires INSIDE the house are yours. The phone company will inspect them, but you have to pay for the service call.

I was in summer camp with a telephone lineman, he said this is very common, taping and recording. He said there are two ways to be sure, one is the 'clicking' you are hearing is a surge in the line. One way to be sure is to do a voltage test, phones run on very low voltage, and a recording device, or monitoring device sends a current to the source. Which would result in a slighlty higher voltage. If you are not savy doing a voltage test, call the phone company and ask to speak to a lineman. Ask him unoffically if he would check for a little sumpin-sumpin on the side. It may seem forward, but my friend at summer camp said many of his fellow lineman made money on the side searching these things out. He said many were pretty complex. (also, getting away from a controlling, suspicious partner may be easier)

I have heard that there is usually a tapping sound or beeping sound. With so much advanced technology these days though, there may be devices that are silent. If she is suspicious, she may be able to contact her phone company and see if they can tell.

yes it is possible. the phone company might not know it. it could be a computer generated software tied up on your line that would record calls coming in and going out. i have a software but it is installed on my cellphone that could monitor all calls that i do and i receive. the thing that you can hear is a small click at the beginning of the conversation. and i know even though you would call the phone company, they would not be able to trace it. it would be best if she just change her phone number for security purposes.
