One may also ask why do we not witness such atrocities in other developed nations; the fact is this is not the greatest nation on earth only the wealthiest and most selfish. Other developed nations are much more inclusive and don't seem to generate these loners who are prone to violent behaviour.
Given our penchant for violence and militarism it's suprising these incidents are not more frequent.

i don't remember the exact stats but guns kill about 50,000 people a year in this country while the next weapon on the list, knives, kills around 3,000. you do the math and then tell me guns don't kill people.

I honestly don't believe the issue here is the Guns at all I think that the real question is why in all the people who knew this person every day didn't someone notice that he needed some help...
Why didn't someone make it a priority to say hi to him, why didn't the teachers notice that he was a loner and needed someone to reach out a hand and help him?

*no*, a gun is not generally capable of killing a person without an operator
*yes*, an operator without a gun is capable of killing a person
and
*yes*, people have been killing people since long before the invention of the gun
what else is there to conclude, than that people kill people, and that guns are merely inanimate objects that some people simply choose as their deadly weapon of choice?
The human animal will always be capable of killing, regardless of what weapons are available to them. Knowledge, as well as several of the human emotions, can make the human itself into a weapon in the absence of an externally acquired weapon.
As I will say for many of the problems in today’s society, the solution lies with proper parenting. Proper parenting includes taking the steps necessary to ensure that one’s children are healthy, properly educated (socially and academically), and not abused.

It's like letting the genie out of the bottle -- once guns became readily available, there was no way to prevent people from having them. And while you are correct that guns don't kill people, PEOPLE kill people, having easy access to a gun makes it easier to do.
What's the answer? There doesn't seem to be a ready solution. Turning universities and high schools (and junior high and elementary schools) into prison-like settings where everyone in the building must pass through a metal detector, everyone is subject to random drug testing, everyone must have a psychological profile to pick out those who are apt to go ballistic -- these are all retrograde steps because as soon as you put one control or condition in place, someone figures out a way to get around it. Or comes up with a new weapon that hadn't been figured in the original equation.
If that Virginia Tech student didn't have a gun, he could have found another way to kill all those people. He could have done it with poison gas, with toxins, with plague spores -- there are a hundred different ways he could have done it. The problem was with the student, not the means by which he delivered his deadly rage.
What can we do to recognize and help people when they get into a state like that? Did any of his friends, neighbors, acquaintances, ever notice anything 'wrong'? Probably. But given the way our society operates, you can't call the psycho police on a 'hunch' and say you think someone needs watchiing, or needs help. We need to find a better system to reach disturbed minds before they explode into uncontrollable rage.

I know most Americans do not know this, but other countries have vastly stricter controls on guns than we do here, and they also enjoy VASTLY lower rates of violent crime! It is fact. I don't see how a bunch of terrified morons with guns makes me or you any safer at all. I feel sorry for people who are so fearful of others the only way they feel they can live life is by carrying a deadly weapon.

Probably not, however, the underlying problem is not the gun, it's the acceptance of violence as a solution to our problems. Every time daddy tells little Johnny it's OK to beat the crap out of someone for perceived slights or threats, every time a bully is allowed to be a bully without consequences and every time the weak see that it is OK to be terrorized by the strong, we shall re-enforce the belief that violence is a viable solution to life's problems. This man took it to the extreme, but States have been doing it for millennia and despots for as long. The Holocaust was no more unique among terrible acts than Stalin's pogroms or the Khmer rouge or Tieneman square or...... . The question is why do we find this so shocking? We train our little tykes to fight for what's right....with fists and guns.

It is important to remember that in the right hands, anything can be a weapon. Tragically, this sort of thing is the result of not using that information right.
But still, why make weapons? Are we going off to battle? Only keep such things if you need defese, I say, but even the, there must be laws for that.

Chris Rock said it best, He recommends not doing away with bullets but making them so expensive that it would be hard to get them. He joked, "Man I am going to shoot you n*&#ga' ! . . . As soon as I save up enough! I got me a nice bullet on layaway, but when I get it... you better watch out!"

Guns make it far too easy to kill someone. It is not as real as strangling, or close combat. People can shoot someone who could never kill at close quarters.

Banning guns from Americans hasn't helped anybody. The bad guys are going to get their hands on guns one way or the other. They don't care about laws. So what kind of situation does that put the law abiding citizens in? They don't have the adequate means of protecting themselves from the guys with guns.
In Texas one guy tried to rob a convenience store with a firearm. Immediately, 4 people pulled their guns on him! Without the means of protecting ourselves, the bad guys don't have anything to fear, except for the police, of course, IF they get there in time.

In a sense , your right, but if people didn't utilize guns they would resort to other methods , such as anthrax , bombs , etc and the fatalities would be much more massive, than that of a handgun.

So you're saying that if he was smarter he would have used something else? Like a bomb? Easy to make, the instructions are all over the Internet for bombs using common household products. Maybe he could have gotten THOUSANDS of people instead of a couple dozen.
Don't you get it? He was a freaking CRIMINAL who has no regard for the law! HE would have had guns if they were illegal.

He obtained the guns illegally.
It wasn't like he was some card-carrying member of the NRA who decided to take out some college kids. He was a mentally disturbed person, who bought two guns with the serial numbers filed off, and went on his killing spree.
It is a Federal offense to sell guns without a dealers license, and it is a felony to possess a gun that has the serial numbers obliterated or tampered with. Why not go after the people who sell these guns and make their lives so difficult or incarcerate them for so long that they will stop dealing in guns like these.

If that Virgina Tech student didn't have a GUN to kill all those innocent students. Would we be talking about guns today?
Interestingly, according to gun control laws already in place, he didn't have a gun. That is it was already illegal to carry a gun onto campus even he did own one legally, and against college policy to have one in his dorm room.
People who are going to commit murder are going to do it with whatever tools they can acquire, legally or illegally. People who are going to commit mass murder are going to acquire whatever resources they need to do so - be it guns or explosives - no matter how strong the legislation in place to prevent it.
Making something illegal doesn't make it disapear.
