edsawyer - goodnight, Debra	Why not... The wording of this question suggests why most anti-choice people are misguided. Whether or not a person 'believes' in abortion is not really the point. I certainly don't think it's the best solution in many situations where it's applied and I would be happiest in a world where abortion was never neccessary. But what I think about abortion is irrelevant. The important question is whether or not I believe that it is up to me or anyone else other than the woman in question whether or not to have an abortion. Sperry	The problem with this question and the abortion debate is framing the issue as "believing" in abortion. Whether you believe in it is irrelevant. Abortion is illegal because over 50 years of Supreme Court precedent has determined that the Constitution forbids the government from interfering with a woman's body, although the woman's right decreases as the child develops. The right of the woman comes from the right of privacy that many of the Constitutional rights imply. It is not just Roe v. Wade that secures a woman's right, rather, many Supreme Court cases, beginning with Griswold v. Connecticut and most specifically with Casey v. Planned Parenthood. These decisions are very well articulated and reasoned. The problem is that most Americans have not been presented with the reasoning in these cases and are relatively uninformed as to why abortion is legal.
