Changing your name... how to/suggestions?
I really want to change my last name and I'm wondering how you'd go about doing that. I'd also like to hear some suggestions -- nothing like "Anderson" though, I was thinking more like McCoolname.... ahhaha
Sentimental value has always been a big deal to me, but I totally hate this last name and would rather have something cool
Additional Details
Oh yeah Crowley isn't my real last name.
Maybe I should make it be! Hah

If you haven't paid your own rent/mortgage you should keep the name your parents gave you. It's insulting to them to take away one of their few rights.

it is my understanding that you may simply begin to go by (be known as?) whatever new name you choose, without having to go to court. That said, you cannot adopt a new name in an attempt to defraud, avoid payment of monies owed, or to avoid capture by any police jurisdiction. In other words, if you are square with society and just want a new name, go for it--and good luck.

You can use any name you want to as long as you aren't committing fraud or dodging bill colelctors. Of course, it will be your real name on all documents. I suggest you try using whatever name you like for a few years before legally changing it.

Then you can legally change it. It depends on the state what is required. Nolo press does a good book on it if you are in California. (Check your library) Otherwise, you might see if your state bar association website has the information. You can also check with the local law library to see if they can show you what forms to use.

Or you can talk to an attorney. Basically, you fill out some forms and submit them to court. In some places, they just stamp okay if no one objects. In other cases, the judge will want to talk to you and find out why you want to change it. You may have to put it in the paper that you plan to change it, so if you are running from creditors or something, they can see the change. (They do check.) They can then object and say if you are trying to hide.

Just be very sure it's the name you want.

Name change can be such a pain sometimes. I recently had mine amended due to typos with my entire name guess the recorder just got off a DUI stint because they couldn't spell the simplest name. I had to pay a 141.50 fee go before a judge he/she ask you a buncha questions like are you running from the law or debt. You tell the judge no (if you aren't lol) then they either grant or deny the name change you sign some documents they print it up with the raised state seal and you submit a copy to your vital records office with a fee..my fee was 30.00 to issue a new birth certificate with your new name. Then you have to go to the social security office and pay a fee to request a name change show the admenment papers (the state will send you the copies back). that takes about 6 wks.

Yeap, Definitely a pain.
