I'm assuming you live in the states. If so disability works in this manner.....
You first call your local Social Security Office. They will send you paperwork to complete and schedule an appointment.
You will need a statement from your doctor that you are unable to work. Most likely the Social Security Office will send you to their doctor for an evaluation.
How long this process takes, depends on the state you live in. The Social Security Office can best answer this for you.
Mine took 3 months, which according to others, they couldn't believe it only took that long. Also, a lot of disability claims are denied and you will need an attorney.
You need to get in contact with your local family services as far as to what you are entitled to with financial help. They can also lead you in the direction you need to go. Also contact your county township trustee.
From my experience before my disability income began, I was constantly beating my head against the wall to get some sort of help (of which I rec'd VERY little, NOT even food stamps). I had no income and a home to maintain. If you have children it seems to be a different story! Which I felt was unfair...I had been working and paying taxes for 25 years! I sure didn't ask for my disease, but that's how they made me feel. If you are married, all social services take into account your spouse's income.
Like I said, you will need your doctor's assistance for proof of your disability. I left my career of 22 years due to my disease and was not penalized. All states procedures are different.
Best Wishes and hope you are well soon!!!

Surely it depends on the illness. Is it a case of you have
been off for so long now that you don't feel like going back?
Cos if it is then - tough - thats life. Unless you are unfit for
work you will not get anything (incapacity benefit). And if
you do go on benefits - isn't that for people who are looking
for work? I would think seriously about this one!

If you leave your job because of a choice you made then you won't be entitled to get anything. If you don't feel you can get back to work just yet, why don't you get your sick leave extended. You could also ask your employer if they could give you a couple of months off - unpaid leave. Maybe you just need to chill out longer and you are not ready yet.

If you voluntarily give up work, you will not receivr any benefits for up to 26 weeks. So unless you can support yourself until you will be able to get benefits, then i suggest that you don't give up on your job.
It is entirely different if the company finnish you though.

You will be penalised for giving up your job voluntarily. you would have to wait at least 6 weeks for any benefits. You will only recieve about £60 a week dole money and that is if they think that you are entitled to it. In those 6 weks waiting you have to prove that you are actively looking for work. Every vacancy they send you to, the interviewer will have to sign a form the dole office will give you, to say that you attended the interview. Don't be a fool, stay in your job.

You are not entitled to anything, unless you have a disability. Just becasue you are sick, does not mean that you cannot work

If your off sick & company paying you sick pay best stay on that until they get rid of you.
If still unable to return to work because your ill & can no longer get money from work ie paid sick leave at full/half rate or SSP, you'd need to apply for Incapacity Benefit &/or Income Support depending on how long you've paid into system will determine your entitlement & amount you receive.
This could take a minimum of 8wks to process so could be without any money for a very long time.
But its not all plain sailing, you'll still have to provide sick notes, attend Jobcentre for interviews & Personal Capability Assessment to look at what you can do instead of what you can't.
So much easier really to get off backside & return to work.

I you don't have a "good reason" for leaving work you can lose 2 months benefit. I should ask the CAB or your job centre what this means.
After that you might receive jobseekers allowance or income support, housing benefit and council tax benefit. They are all means tested. You should be available for work or unfit for work.
If you are incapable of work you can claim incapacity benefit.
If you have a signicant disability (incapable of preparing a meal or walk unaided) you can claim Disbaility Living Allowance.
DLA claims can take forever because of medical evidence.
Other benefits take about 2 months, if applied for properly.
Note DLA is available to you whilst working if appropriate.

You say it is as though it is your god given right to pack up work and go on benefits. I would have dearly loved to have kept my job instead of having to go on sickness benefits until I retired.
Some folk just don't know what side their bread is buttered.
Anyway what is wrong with you before I get carried away is what ails you curable?

you dont say what is wrong with you so why is everybody so quick to judge also you dont say what sort of job you do so why do they all asume you work in an office you could be a brickie or a factory worker which is really hard work we are not all blessed with cooshy office jobs,so if you are unfit to do the job you do you are entitled to some sort of benefit we are not all looking for a free ride.
