Are cemeteries ever turned into other things?

just out of curiosity, do cemeteries ever get re-developed and become something like a mall or grocery store or anything. if not do plots ever get reused, like ok this person been dead for 60 years time to cycle another person in there for another 60 years.

the reason i said 60 years cause that was the oldest plot i seen in the cemetery when visiting and there were i dont know how to say this, newer residents around him

I don't believe development or "recycling" (as you so delicately put it) is supposed to happen. Even very old cemeteries are considered sacred. Of course, a cemetery could be so old all of the markers are gone, so no one knows it was there.
You probably were in a sixty year old cemetery.

The cemetery where my Great Grandmother was buried (Calvary Cemetery in East L.A.) supposedly dug up all the graves, moved them to their new location (New Calvary Cemetery in East L.A.) and built apartment buildings on their old site.
My Grandmother never believed that they actually dug up her mother's grave.
She Always said that one day they'll be doing some digging at the old location and they'll find the bodies of those interred there and claim there must have been some mass murder at that location in the past.

Cemeteries are sometimes relocated for public works projects.
The Tennesee Valley Authority condemned entire towns & relocated the occupants( alive & dead) when large areas would be flooded due to construction of hydroelectric dams.
That much is history.
For commercial development , dont think it happens very often if at all without a big legal battle.

Yes they do. Actually I have seen graves over 200 years old, but that's not what you asked.
They don't recycle them. The exhume all the graves and remove the caskets and move them to the new location. This is done for two reasons.
1. They have run out of room, and need more land to accommodate additional plots.
2. Through eminent domain or through private business investment, they are offered more money for the land they own than they feel they can turn down.
Either way they do not build on the graves they exhume them and move them to the new location.
