Fireman's starting salary - $35k-$45k
Nurse's starting salary - $45k-$60k
Paramedic's starting salary - $30k
Police Officer's starting salary - $28k
The Police don't make more than the others in the area I live in.

They don't, at least around here they don't, not even close. An RN is paid very good, I have worked at the same job for 9 years but I could quit and go to work tomorrow at any hospital for around $26.00 an hour easily with a huge sign on bonus. Officers in this area make around $2200 a month. EMT's make anywhere from $11-$15 an hour and Paramedics make around $16-$18 an hour. Fireman are paid well but still they don't make us much as an RN.

Your question is a little confusing. You say you think cops are more valuable, or equally as, but your question is why do we get paid more?
In general cops get paid less than those other professions. I actually get paid less than most teachers and I definitely work more than 8 months out of the year.
I think cops should be paid more (there aren't many other jobs that require ballistic vests or spike vests be worn)

Because the Police are Government debt collectors, they also protect Politicians, the others do not.

The main point everyone is missing is the negotiating power of the Police Federation.
In the early 1970's police pay was comparatively poor, the federation addressed this problem with an inflation busting pay rise and increased benefits.
The police are considered the primary frontline emergency service and are paid accordingly, this is not to say the other services don't deserve better pay and conditions.
Another reason they are paid higher is, unlike any other emergency service, the Police can dictate where an officer can live and whom they can marry. You have to submit a report stating which house you're buying, the area is then assessed by a senior officer for suitability, your intended spouse is background checked, both can be refused.

The police regarded by most thinking people as far more important as the others couldn't function if society broke down to lack of and order. All the jobs you have listed have dangers but in nearly every incident of danger the police accompany or attend first. The emergency services consist of people trained in their fields the police deal with numerous incidents which vary greatly in how they are dealt with and in a free society they have the very real and serious responsibility of being able to arrest and if necessary use force on the public.Basically they have wider powers and responsibility. This is obviously a UK question .

Tell me how often are nurses risking their lives in the performance of their duties? Even firemen don't usually get shot at as part of their job.

When everyone is running away from violent, deranged and armed criminals etc, the police run towards them.
The other services do a valuable job, but do not routinely face the same dangers the police do on a day to day basis. When someone kicks off with them, they walk away and call the police. Anyway, we dont get paid that much more. I think its the same pay as the fire service.

Interesting question. All the emergency services are valuable as they all save lives (and yes some of you hate this but that includes the police as well).
The difference in pay is not quite as vast as some of you imagine.
Top rate nurses and fireman don't do that badly at all.
There is alot of animosity towards the police which is a great shame. It's a no win job, damned if you do damned if you don't.
The police have far more restrictions on their private lives than any of you on here, and that includes nurses fireman and politicians as well.
Police management have virtually total control over the working lives of police officers and even up to a point, in their private life as well.
As for idle coppers;- There has never ever been so many people arrested each year than there are at present.
You might have heard that all the jails are full and prisoners are being continually released early bacause of the lack of space.
I don't presume all these prisoners handed themselves in, so someone must be out there arresting them......is it you?
Don't compare the forces with the emergency services, it's a different ball game. However, I do think that the services should be better paid. I know what I'm talking about as I served 10 years in the Army (which will be more than most of you here).

perhaps its because effectively they are like soldiers put their lives on the line, i mean who would do the job in reality, hated by some, disliked and vilified, and yet they are the ones we turn to in a crisis. I think we should pay them well, and get rid of the daft plastic plods.

basically because theres a lot more risk involved in police work, true there are hazards in the fire department too but they are much less frequent, just have a browse on the net. how many stories can you find about police being killed or seriously injured on duty compared to the other emergency services? the real crime is that they are earning way less than footballers, you can get 100,000's a week for kicking a bit of leather around and you save peoples lives for a living and you get a couple of grand a month.. its a sick society my friend

I don't know were southern Belle is but the salaries in the UK far in front of other emergency services here in England. All this cobblers of police putting their lives on the line ha ha this country isn't like New York,Jo burg,LA etc, much as the cops would like you to believe!Firemen called out are in far more danger from not just the blaze but yobs attacking them as well.Is the poster seriously comparing a copper witha brain surgeon? It is all wrong to put coppers ona pedestal they truly dont deserve! What about the real heroes soldiers in Afghnistan or Iraq?now your talking danger for a pittance to what coppers get!
