Register it -- if the police kick down your door, it's likely stolen.
I'm sure there's a way to inquire at the DOJ website.
You can call your local police station and ask too (not 911).

The gun is stolen. You don't need a website, you KNOW the person that gave it to you is lying. There is NO paperwork for a private sale.

Call your local police. Tell them how you got the gun, so if it is stolen you aren't accused of stealing or receiving stolen property.

The easiest way ( and I do this whenever I buy a weapon from a private seller) is to write down the type, model, caliber and serial number of the weapon. ( You will find the serial number on the swing out part of the cylinder on most handguns). Take this information ( DO NOT TAKE THE WEAPON) to your local Police Department or Sheriff's Office and ask them to run the serial number. This is a free service. If the weapon has ever been listed as stolen, the police will want you to surrender the weapon. If you explain HOW you obtained it and surrender it willingly, you will not be charged with Receiving Stolen Property ( but they will have some questions to ask your friend who gave it to you).
