How is exactly does the question work for a polygraph test?
|
For example...If the examiner asks "Have you ever stole from an employer?" If you say yes do you get to explain yourself...like you stole a soda from a store you worked at when you were a teen or do they ask you before you take the test and then ask "Besides the instance you told us...have you ever stole anything from an employer? Hope this kinda makes sense... Thanks in advance.

They will also go back and ask you a question like, " Have you ever stole more than a soda" if I'm not mistaken. If possible, you should have a right to not take this test and should get out of it.

No, you do not get to explain yourself after your answer because it doesn't work that way, or everyone would come up with an excuse of why they didn't get the question right. During a polygraph you are only allowed to answer "yes" or "no" for a question. You need to tell them before the test begins about something like that so they can make the question specific.
For example: If you didn't tell them anything, they would ask "have you ever stolen anything before", and then you answer yes or no. If you say no, then it will say that you failed the question. But if you told them before hand what happened, they would likely ask "have you ever stolen anything other than the soda you stole from the store you worked at when you were a teenager", and then you would answer.

They ask you the questions twice. Once when you are not hooked up and again when you are hooked up. You can explain yourself when you are not hooked up, but once hooked up to the detector you are only able to answer yes or no.

The guy will go through all your pre-screening questions first. You two will talk about them and that is the time where you could say that you stole a sota from the store you worked at as a teen then he will tell you "yes that counts or no that doesn't count." THEN when you answer the question for the "real deal" you can answer honestly. Also, the polograph guy writes up a report to send to your chief so if you say "yes" than the chief gets the full story and not just the yes. Might I suggest sitting down with your chief ahead of time and tell him about anything that might pop up? Usually they don't care (don't worry at all about that soda) but it makes the polygraph a lot easier if you're not worrying about what your chief is going to think. Most of the questions are designed just to tell them if you'll tell them the truth. Expect a lot of embarrassing sexual questions.
As for the part of the test when you're hooked up- no, you don't get to explain yourself. You answer yes or no- period. Don't worry though! You can get through this
