Why do lots of people have no car insurance?
of course it must be cheaper to have no insurance than pay over £1000 and if you get caught you only pay a small fine (thats if you get caught)

Because they don't understand the purpose of insurance (no, it's NOT so you don't get into trouble, that's why 5 year olds behave the way they behave), and are poor money managers.

Well basically ppl. can't afford insurance. Or if they can they just decide not to. I agree though its gotta be cheaper to be covered then not.

I believe that in most cases it is due to finances. Many people purchase a car without first doing some research on the cost of insuring the vehicle they want so badly only to find out later that the cost is more than they had expected. The cost of insurance at the time of purchase is usually the last thing on the buyers mind. Those who allow insurance to lapse on existing policies may have run into some financial difficulties. Insurance is an easy thing to not pay since you can't see, hear or feel the "product." Contrary to Craig G's answer, you can absolutely register a car in many states of the U.S. without proof of insurance. Many states have adopted a random computer search of registered vehicles and will send out a letter requesting proof of insurance during the time of the vehicle being registered, also if pulled over, a motorist MUST show proof of insurance. No proof? You are going to receive a citation for which there is a fine and you must show proof of insurance for the next three years. Proof in my state and many others comes in the form of what is called an sr-22. This adds a significant premium to the insurance cost. Bottom line. I feel that the majority of people without insurance would in fact have it if their financial situation were different. This does not excuse them from operating a vehicle without insurance. They are betting they won't be caught or won't be involved in an accident. They are wearing blinders. There are of course those that feel they are above the law and regardless of finances will not spend a penny on insurance.

Yes, you are right. Many people don't have an insurance because they think they can avoid an accident at any time and they think they are a perfect driver. That's what I think. If you have a car insurance it does not mean that you will not drive carefully or it is fine that you can have an accident. For me still better to have an insurance. at least you have help and not so complicated just in case you get in trouble.

Because they're wankers who don't give a toss about anyone other than themselves. Then they whine and winge when they're caught and lose their driving licenses. Sad lot.

I'm from Indiana (a state that requires insurance) and there are idiots who only get insurance to get their tags and that's it. I've seen people come in, purchase a policy and come back the next day to cancel, thinking that they are getting all their money back. Not happenin'! I've also seen people come in right before they go on a trip to get insurance, come in at the last minute before a holiday (i.e. Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve, etc.) and tell me how important insurance is and their policy lapses within a month or so. These people will proceed to have an accident after the policy lapses and then think that a certificate of compliance can be filled out. (Not hardly.) When I was an agent, we had someone bring one in to be filled out and when they were told that they didn't have coverage on that day, they then proceeded to try to bribe the agent (against the law) and then the person who was in trouble already, had someone else sign the form and use an old policy number on it. What they didn't know is that the Indiana BMV (when things are working) does random checks on these forms and this person's license (which was already suspended) was suspended for an additional three years. The person who was suspended came back into the office and flew into a rage and said that everyone in our agency was going to lose their jobs for lying. We just called the cops and they took her away. (I hope they locked her up and threw away the key.)

I understand that insurance is expensive but it's a necessary evil. I would never want to go without it.

They work on the basis that so long as they don't get involved in an accident, who's to know? And if they are - so what. Slapped wrist, don't be a naughty boy - oh, and for knocking down and killing those three people on the pedestrian crossing when you were pissed, how about six months in a nice, comfortable prison, with your own TV - and oh, it'll have to be an open prison because all the real prisons are full of people who can't afford to pay their council tax -- shall I go on???????

Assuming they think at all, they presumably think that they are immune from claims for injuries by third parties, and are willing to write off their own car against the cost of the insurance

You have answered the question yourself.

Until the courts issue substantial penalties for this offence, the idiots who commit this offence will never bother with insurance.

I have seen fines as low as £50 for this crime!!

UNBELIEVABLE!!

while i don't for one minute condone driving without insurance-it would help if the insurance companies didn't blatantly rip us off-please allow me to give an example. i was recently made redundant-i required my car to travel to work-no i am not working my car resides on the drive most of the time-as i am required by contract to inform my insurance company of any changes to my personal circumstances i do the right thing and tell them-and my premium went up!!!!-even though i am not using the car as much-work that one out!!!!.-on another occasion a few years back i applied to insure my car-got the documents through-there was an error-so being the law-abiding person i am i informed the insurance company-who thanked me and then promptly increased my premium by 150 pounds a year-its scandalous and they shouldn't be allowed to get away with it.

You have to have it here in America, or you do not get your car registered. Then again, there are illegal immigrants who do not have insurance, get into accidents, hit and run and drive up costs for the rest of us. BTW, if you get caught here without insurance the fine is around a few hundred dollars, get into an accident, and cannot pay, possibly a few weeks in jail, and your driving record goes to hell.

Because they're idiots.

Yes it's cheaper but:
a) it's against the law to drive without insurance
b) yes, it's a small fine, but if you DO have an accident the cost could be horrendous, bit just to the drive but the other people involved.

It is expensive , but those of us who pay our car insurance are paying extra because of all the people that don't. There was a hit and run on my car and the other car was not insured because of this I can either apply for the money to a special motor bureau and pay a £300.00 excess or just pay for the repairs myself. I will probably have to do the latter and fix it up cheaply, how is that fair when none of it is my fault? Uninsured drivers are causing grief for other people, it's a nightmare if you have a bump with them. I find my car insurance expensive and nobody likes paying it but at the end of the day it has to be paid and it makes me sick all the people that don't. If caught you don't just get a small fine, you get points on your license as well.
