When getting an auto insurance quote, can you lie?
if you lie to get discounts, can they find out and do anything? i'm about to buy new insurance, and they ask if you had any violations in the past 6 months, and i do, but if i skip that part, can i get in trouble? also do they do a background check if you say your a good student when you don't go to school at all?

What do you think? Sure you can lie. They may find out right away, they may not find out until you have to make a claim - and that's when YOU'LL find out that your insurance is void because you provided fraudulent information.

You can't lie about any violations. They have a way of checking it out. My insurance company pulled up my driving records and asked me if I had ever been in a car accident because it showed up on my record. I had no idea what they were talking about because I have never been in an accident that was filed with my insurance company, let alone been in one in my own vehicle.. so they marked it off as it wasn't me, but they do have their ways of finding out. Now lying about some kind of alarm you have on your car is nothing big (its a discount w/some insurance places).. how will they know..

They will find out when they run your driver's license. It will show up anyway. Tell the truth.

Of course you can lie!!! Why not? You'll get quoted a pretty decent premium and once all your underwriting reports are ran, such as your Motor Vehicle Report, Prior Insurance, etc your rates will skyrocket. Then you'll most likely have to find a cheaper rate elsewhere and you'll be charged a short-rate or early cancellation fee. Or, the insurance company will just void your insurance policy and you'll be driving around with no insurance. In the end you're just wasting money. Keep in mind that ALL insurance companies have a clause that states any fraudulent, misleading or withheld information can/will result in a voidance of your auto policy.

What you're talking about is called fraudulent misrepresentation or simply "misrep" in insurance jargon.

First off, don't bother about lying about accidents or tickets. All insurance companies will check your driving record. So, maybe they'd quote you a lower price but you'd get a notification in the mail in a week telling you that you are cancelled or you have a new rate.

Misrep is one of the most common ways for an insurance company to get out of paying a claim. During their claims investigation they are looking specifically for any lies you've told them that you can't keep straight. Usually they're looking for business use, someone that delivers pizzas or uses their car for a taxi but they're trained to look and inquire about everything. If they find something you've lied about, guess what? You've got no insurance for the accident. All of the money you've paid them was for nothing. Insurance is important, it's really not all just a racket to get money out of you. Get in a wreck without insurance and have fun dealing with the other guy's insurance company and attorneys and of course, the law on your own.

Don't lie. It is misrepresentation - a form of insurance fraud. It may seem like little insignificant things but most companies will ask for proof for certain discounts.
As far as the violations in the past 6 months, that you can say no but the information will come up on your Motor Vehicle Report because all violations with your driver's license are compiled on this report. However, if you tell an agent about a violation or enter it online, the insurance company has to surcharge you for it even if it is not on your report.
A lot of times, it's best to get a quote through an agent for accuracy. An agent can tell you about discounts for your state that may not be online.
Hope this helps!

You shouldn't lie about stuff like violations. They will run an MVR on you when the agent writes the policy and the underwriters will catch it. You will also need to provide your grades for the good student discount otherwise you will not get it.
