Driving Instructor (BRAKE!)
In Calif. the age to begin Driver Ed. is 15 1/2 yrs. for your PERMIT. You "may' obtain your provisional license at age 16yrs. although many teens (and parents) are taking longer. The longer you take (AFTER) obtaining your permit, the more practice you'll get.
Be sure you have at least 40 hours of practice driving before taking your drive test at the DMV.

I am an ex driving instructor and have never heard such twaddle. Who ever told her that is a complete idiot. I have taught people in their 60's before who got their license straight away. As long as the person is 17 or over they can apply at any time.

NO, your daughter can apply before her 17th birthday or her 69th year birthday. It certainly doesn't matter. As about the rumours that a learner has to be 18 before they have lessons is just that, a rumour. As for the Loch Ness Monster, well I believe there is something there, being Scottish I have to. Little Green Men from Mars, could be true as well, I'm not a Martian though. Why do people listen to others and start to believe them. Get her licence and we'll see her on the road soon. Good luck

There have been rumours around for as long as I can remember saying the age was going up...certainly back as far as when I was learning to drive nearly 20 years ago!

Don't worry...the Driving Standards Agency who run the driving tests have, this Summer, started a consultation regarding changes to the way learner drivers are taught and tested. This would have been a golden opportunity to increase the age for learning or taking a test but they did not include this in the consultation.

The consultation, like all of these things will take many years to come to fruition and, when it does, will be in a vastly watered-down form. It will mean some significant changes to the test, but even so, they won't be implemented for at least 5 or so years so should not affect her in any way.

I hope that puts your mind at ease.
