I will try. The first license your talking about the: Classified? I'm assuming is your regular license such as A-B-C-D D being a Chauffeurs license. These take no special aptitude. You would apply or you can even get up one day and decide you want to increase the money you spend on your license- In most states the chauffeurs license is approximately $72.00 per 10 year period as apposed to a regular operators license which is approximately $36.00. remember "No Special Test" Now, the Commercial drivers license, cost big bucks and should be applied only when your required to drive for a living. Tractor trailer-Oil delivery truck- School Bus. They are required for all these jobs and you MUST take special tests. Such as: When your planning on driving a Oil truck or truck that has "Hazardous Material, It requires that type of test. How to and what to do If you accidentally spill your load. School buses require the same except no HazMat. This in some states cost approximately $200.00 to $300.00 and It is mandatory. If for instance you want to drive a 'car Service vehicle" You need the Chauffeurs classification. All others is just Operator. Hope I explained It.

A commercial driver's license is for transporting people for profit, like a taxi driver. A classified license is for everyday use.

Ohio I assume?

Classified drivers license is like a learners permit to get a commercial drivers license.

Procedures for Obtaining a CDL or CDL Instruction Permit
To get a CDL or CDL instruction permit (CDIP) you are required to be at least 18 years of age and have a valid Ohio State driver's license.

NOTE:
Employers may impose additional standards and/or higher age requirements. Bring the following items to the licensing office:

Your social security card issued by the Social Security Administration. Your social security number is required for identification purposes. This is a mandatory requirement.

A CDIP may be issued to an individual who holds a valid automobile or classified driver's license. The holder of a CDIP may drive a commercial motor vehicle on a highway only when accompanied by the holder of a commercial driver's license, valid for the type of vehicle driven, who occupies a seat beside the individual, for the purpose of giving instruction in driving the commercial motor vehicle.

The CDIP is valid for (6) six months. A CDIP expires after six (6) months and cannot be renewed. A new permit must be purchased and the vision and knowledge tests must be re-taken.

The CDIP fee is $25.50.

And of course the commercial license allows you to drive commercially.
