Jonbob	Yes you will need a permit for roughly 6 months or 50 hours of driving time before you can test for your Drivers License The test is usally 10-15 questions ranging from common driving practices about turning signals, traffic signals, situations (ie school buses[by the way you can pass a school bus with a stop sign if there is a median ;)]) and stuff like that...you may wanna go to the DMV to pick up a driving pamphlet that shows you the rules of the road if you've never driven before If you pass the test you do get a picture taken on that same visit. The permit test is a written test and the drivers license is a driving test meaning actually driving on the road and using your knowledge Just relax and use your knowledge and youll be fine Was this answer helpful to you? broberts86	The test is fairly easy if you have common sense AND read the dmv booklet...takes abut 20 minutes but behind the wheel which is about 30 minus the waiting...and no you need a license to drive if you are 18 or older in California and if you have never drivenbefore I would strongly suggest practicing on some dirt roads before getting on the public roads because the cost of getting pulled over can be costly... 1. Non licensed 400.00 2. No insurance 693.00 3. Car gets towed (amount goes up daily at the tow yard Oh btw you can get insurance without a license however it will be expensive and virtually pointless because if something happens and you file a claim it will be denied anyway becaause you cant drive legally...but they wont turn you down because thats how they make there money Was this answer helpful to you? BigD	You still need to get a permit since you've never had a license before, but since you're over 18, there are no permit hold time or driving time requirements. Once you pass the written test, you can schedule your driving test, if you want to. With the permit, you can only drive with someone who is 18 years old with a valid California license. They take your picture when you apply for the permit, along with your thumb print, application/license fee and vital statistics.
