If he gets a conviction for drink driving it will render his insurance null and void. So in those circumstances, no he would not get his repairs paid for.

If the officer at the scene gave him a sobriety test & he failed then it is documented and the insurance will not pay for anything. If he was drinking & over the legal limit and it is not documented then they will pay for it.

If he was in the accident with another person, then I doubt it because the police will charge him with a DUI.
I don't know about if he was in an accident with a pole or tree or something else though.

It really depends on a number of factors.
Was he over the limit and breathalysed? If so no.
Were the police involved and the fact noted that he had been drinking?
Who knows he had been drinking? If only he does then he'll have to blag it.
However the overall message is don't drink and drive it can be a very costly mistake.

They should. But they may drop your friend after that, depending on how many accidents they've been in.

If the cops stated he was drunk, then no. Being drunk voids your policy coverages.

I think he'll need to save the $0.97 per hour he'll earn in prison and not blow it on smokes.

Unless the insurance company had a drink/ drugs clause on the policy or specifically states that cover would be reduced then the fact that he was drunk will NOT affect the cover.
He will have to check his policy wording - (in fact why didn't he read his policy when he took it out?)

If your friend was breathalysed and over the legal limit, the Insurance company will not pay out. Legally, he/she was in no condition to drive so his/her motor insurance will be invalidated.

as long as his policy is paid in full the accident will be covered. premiums will go up and /or there is a good chance he will be dropped. depending on what state(if in united states) he will probably have to fill out sr-22 form to purchase insurance. there is also possibility driver license may be suspended.

They will pay for the other damage, but probably not for the own car. Probably they will terminate the insurance and black-list as well. What a idiot you "friend?" is

THe chances are they will, but it is possible that he could be nonrenewed and will have to file for a SR22 form. He will be charged extra points as well if he is allowed to stay with his carrier and also with his new carrier.

if you have an accident when driving and blood/breath or urine test shows alcohol in your system i doubt any insurance company will pay for damages to your own vehicle because your insurance will be void.

No. You are only insured if you are driving legally. If he was over the limit then he was driving illegally and should be locked up.

It truly amazes me how little people know about this subject. It your friend has Collision Coverage, the insurance company will pay for the damage to his vehicle. There is no exclusion for drunk driving.
All of the folks who have stated there is no coverage should read their policy. Please provide us with the wording of the exclusion. Somebody also stated that he was DWI, so he was at-fault. The insurance would not pay!?! Of course they will pay, that is why you have collision coverage. Also, you can be DWI and not be at fault for an accident. I have paid plenty of claims(and trust me I know the auto policy inside out), where the DWI driver was rearended.
If you live in a No-Fault state, you may have PIP coverage. Now that is a coverage that would be denied if you were DWI.
The only collision coverage exclusion is the insurance will not pay for any damage related to prearranged/organized stunt, demolition, racing contests.

It may if he was not convicted of anything, MPO, they shouldn't, he shouldn't have been drinking and driving...He could have killed someone or himself...wow, will the insurance pay for that and make it all better?
Sorry, I lost someone to a drunk driver....I don't like it and don't think anyone who does it should be rewarded in anyway.

If he has a standard auto policy with collision coverage and no exclusion for drunken driving, than yes. No doubt at all.
Insurance pays for stupity. Many answers say no. If that was true, than insurance would not pay for accidents due to sppeding, an illegal U-turn etc. 99% probability that he will not be offered a renewal especially if he is young unless he is already in the assigned risk plan

Assuming your friend is in the U.S. you received a helluva collection of WRONG answers from people who are only guessing or misinformed and obviously aren't claim adjusters.
Getting a DWI/DUI does NOT void coverage. If it did insurance companies would save millions of dollars each year. I have paid out on literally hundreds if not thousands of claims on behalf of drunk idiots over the last 23 years.
Just for the hell of it, I suggest that everybody read the exclusions sections of your policy. You will not see any exclusion of coverage for drinking and driving.
While it is illegal to drink and drive it does not automatically void coverage.

In reply to the (sad) majority of your answers, the insurance company will cover his damage provided he was comprehensive and did not have a "special" policy that restricts cover when over the limit.
My apologies to all those who answered correctly.
I have spent 15 years in the insurance industry and dealt with many claims where the claimant was off their box with either drink and/or drugs and they ALL got paid. This question comes up about 6 times a year for me.
